GTR WOULD YOU?

If you put in down as monthly cost (the Financial Advisor in me :lol: ) it looks like this give or take;

 

£600 - loan

£100 - insurance (+/-)

£100 - Servicing

£300 - Petrol ( based on 8k a year, 200 miles per tank x £90 per tank = £3,600 per year / 12 )

 

So before you know it, the real world cost is £1,100 PER MONTH before you replaced any consumables such as tyres or brakes. You might be able to shave a bit off the insurance or even the petrol but then why buy it if your gonna do less than 8k per year.

 

If you have more than £1,500 spare every month after paying all your bills and living costs then, why not? Otherwise, think again. Save hard and reduce the amount you'd need to borrow as the main bulk of that £1,100 is the cost to purchase the car in the first place.......

MOT, tax, insurance, servicing, 1 set of tyres, depreciation of around 2k/year (i.e. everything it costs you to use the car on the road for 12 months), works out at £450 a month for me. I do a lot of miles (about 450->500mile a month), so the remaining £450 is fuel for me to get to work/back each month. Obviously if its just a w/end car the petrol costs would be less. In your example, £300.

I've been reading sbout running costs of an R35 and while they are high, they're not as high as some people make out. Once the cars out of its 3 year warranty youre better of getting it serviced at a specialist such as Middlehurst or Litchfield whose prices are much more reasonable!

 

I know my brother gets his serviced at Litchfield due to the fact that they're specialists and it's cheaper, win win!

 

Tires are pricey but not that much more are they really, and should last you easily 15k miles or normal driving.

BWAHAHAHA no. You'll never get 15K miles out of a set of tyres on a GTR, hell I don't get that on the 911 and it's much lighter on the tyres. To be fair though, you'd be mad to buy the OEM tyres again as they're silly money, a set of R888s is cheaper I believe. Even better would be the MPSS if they come in the correct size. Brakes aren't cheap either, and being a heavy car it will eat those up too.

 

On sensible driving you think not? My brothers has 10k on it at the moment with original tyres, granted that's 5k short and they do need changing but it's not been 10k of driving miss daisy.

i'm glad you don't do sums for my bank :lol:

 

Depreciation and tyres, tax, yeah, that would put the equivalent on the 350z as like maybe 1/5 or less?

I guess it depends on the compound and how you define sensible.

 

The m3 had vreds and they lasted maybe 8k of sensible driving, the r35 has a huge amount of power and not that wide wheels iirc, surely it couldn't last much longer even with the power being split?

i have yet to see more than 5k from a set of tyres on my zed. My cars a weekend car though and only comes out to play so very rarely does " normal" drives.

So thats not a like for like comparison then is it. ;)

 

In my example I never included MOT, Tax, Tyres or depreciation. All of that on a GTR with your mileage is likely to increase that monthly cost by about £800 or so (£2k service, £2k tyres, £5k depreciation, £400 tax annually).

 

So, it would cost you circa £1,900 a month compared to your £900 a month 350z when compared like...............

 

£1900 a month is a lot of money to be throwing at a depreciating asset like a car, not when a lot of people don't even take home £1900 a month from their salaries....

I think that's a little high. 2 years of F430 ownership including all the above and a ridiculously expensive extended warranty comes in at £1350 ish a month. That's factoring in about 5 times the mileage that I've done too.

 

You don't only drive it on rollers do you? :p

The £1,900 I mentioned includes £600 loan payments. Remove that and it is almost identical to your monthly figure, which is what everyone has been saying; GTR = Supercar running costs ;)

I'd be surpised if a £35k gtr drops a huge ammount in two years though, but I agree, the running costs are not comparable to a 350z in any way IMHO.

 

I'd be under no illusion that running a gtr would be a huge amount cheaper than running an exotic.

 

Interestingly has anyone seen just how much the new Jag XJ's are depreciating!! 59k long wheelbase prem lux at 12 months old with about 10k on the clock can be had for 38k. Over 35% in one year! And I thought the xf was bad.

Agreed. The relatively "budget" cost of a car with super car beating performance is a big draw, and the running costs will have caught many out I'm sure.

 

Corvette z06 doesn't look too expensive to run, there was a lingenfelter too on ph which looked quite tasty.

 

Nissan gtr is a false budget supercar beater, but I bet the vette isn't.

Maybe not, but it appears to be a completely stupid car and imho lacks the character and gorgeous sound of the vette. Not to mention the tuneability.

 

Ekona, presumably they don't have to import parts too often and besides I end up importing most parts from the usa anyways already :p

 

People would rather have silly cars like the gtr under the pretence they're built well, how that can be the case with the passenger collision system and transmission issues it had i'm not sure.
