Really fast!

Just heard that the people at CERN now think that, at least some things, can travel fast than light. This debunks Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity. The possibilities, at least in theory, are quite profound - Time Travel??

Interesting times, sorry I am a bit of a nerd

I wouldn't write of Relativity just yet. This one experiment is arrayed against decades of evidence confirming the speed limit. It's been put out for peer examination, so I wouldn't go making any trips to the bookies ;)

Edit: New Scientist have a more in-depth look at the science and possible explanations: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20957-dimensionhop-may-allow-neutrinos-to-cheat-light-speed.html

I love stuff like this, you have to give to the pointy heads for even coming up with how to test this stuff :notworthy: ..... far beyond by feeble brain capacity

I have spent a far few hours working in here..... http://www.diamond.ac.uk/ Its very, very cool in the light ring B)

Is this where they have that machine that can reach temperatures hotter than the Sun?

Dont know about heat... but the Synchrotron light can be as much as 100 billion times brighter than the sun :scare:

After consulting with my old school friend on this, he sent back the following, to my spazzy questions, plus some Physicist humor too.

http://www.phy.bris.ac.uk/people/laing_a/index.html

"On the CERN thing, those scientists are being pretty cautious to not draw any conclusions from their findings. Essentially, particles (Neutrinos) get form France to the detector Italy at a time when they should still have at least 20 feet left to cover. The most likely explanation is a systematic error in the experiment. If it turned out that the experimental findings are good, then we can't really say yet whether or not it implies time travel since time travel via superluminal velocity comes from the theory which has just been invalidated".

PS Joke...

And the barman says "I'm sorry we don't serve Neutrinos"

A Neutrino walks into a bar.
