Husky Posted February 2, 2011 Share Posted February 2, 2011 I'm just turned 25 too mate. and that same quarter century feeling is there. Currently I look after software and electrical development for freelanders, sounds ok and to some extent it is I guess. But when you take your hobby and turn it into a job it just isn't what you expect it to be! So before I got to the end of my rope I have found a new job and put everything in motion to move. I'm going to be calibrating gearbox control software (shift change patterns etc etc) Which means i basically get to dick about in cars alot and go abroad to drive them on ice lakes etc. The point I'm making is don't just think about it. Get up and do it. Ebized Posted February 2, 2011 Share Posted February 2, 2011 My youngest son having reached 30 decided he really had had enough of IT and wanted to be is own boss. Decided that black cabbing would give him that 'freedom' and is now doing the knowledge in London - fortunately with support from his girlfriend in terms of accommodation, and having just got a part-time delivery job with Sainsbury's earning just enough so no tax to pay. Oh, and with the odd bit of help from Dad and so he can keep his car. Goal is to pass the exams in time to be cabbing for the Olympics, so for some while he is going to be rather skint and its not much fun out on the moped in winter. But in this present climate leaving employment without something else arranged is very scary - especially when we heard yesterday that 95% of jobs that were taken up were part-time. Two weeks later I was in the office and I'm happy to be there, I dropped money to be there but it was worth it to get some routine in my life. I was travelling constantly and it wears you down unless your partner wants you to go away all the time! 3 years in the office now and love what I do. I preferred a manual graft type of job. I'm now in a job where I love my job but don't enjoy the company I work for. We're underpaid, and to make any decent money you have to do extra hours and weekend work. I'm now searching for a job which will balance this equation with decent pay and not so much overtime. I'm a mutiskilled building service engineer. I studied 4 years at college, sponsored by a massive company to be qualified in commercial gas, air con and ventilation, plumbing and electrical. I then moved under a tupe agreement to a new company. They have then sponsored me through my hnc(English equivalent of btec I think) in building design and projects management. This has been for the last two years and although may sound easy it's alot of maths and equations and is pretty challenging. So for 6 years I've worked and studied at the same time. Willy P Posted February 2, 2011 Share Posted February 2, 2011 Just finished my apprenticeship with a large pharmaceutical company, they paid for my degree and I studied part time for a BSc hons in Applied Biological Sciences. I do enjoy my job but it isn't particularly well paid considering the hours and dedication required. Pharmaceuticals as an industry seems to be falling apart at the moment (Pfizer closed a site in Kent yesterday making 2400 unemployed) and GSK did the same last year but the amount of redundancies was a lot higher than this. So, I enjoy my job, being a scientist is like doing a massive puzzle, and I love the fact I have to think "outside the box". However, I feel I ought to change as well if I want to earn some proper money. Same boat as you mate My future options: PhD, work my way up through my company, change job, retrain. I am as confused as you are However, I agree with most other people on here, DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL YOU HAVE FOUND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO!!! I know I don't want to carry on in the field I'm currently in it isn't rewarding work and dull as dishwasher. I have a degree in business studies and finance so I know I'm not completely tied down to what I do now. I'm lucky in a sense that I don't have a huge amount of outgoings although I am due to move out with the girlfriend soon. If needs must though the zed would be first for the chop as I'm happy to make sacrifices to set myself up for the future as much as it would hurt! varley16 Posted February 4, 2011 Share Posted February 4, 2011 im in one of these situations, im a vehicle tech, did work at jaguar, now at ford, and im wanting to change career or work from home, wanted to go into motor sport but dont know where to look, or want to buy damaged cars and break them, sell parts off, but havent got a garage, so have to wait to buy my next home, also i have had a go at stock market last year, made some money, but now im really wanting to really get into it and see if i can make that go well for me. if anyone has advice on anythin on stocks and shares, then PM, not tryin to hi-jack the thread, so ill shut up now. thanks. I’m 26 now and feel the same sometimes but married and two properties means I am royally stuck!! I cannot see anyone paying me min 40k to start as a trainee again so I see “my†only real options are... Head for London go work in the square mile earn big bucks maybe... or not and hate it even more.. Or Head overseas!! I have for the last 24 months on/off been looking at the UAE, and trying to get into finances over there, my cousin is out there at the moment part of a management team (Lower) in a leisure centre earning 40k tax free with accommodation she is 22 with no previous experience at all in management ... just knowing where to start done all the normal trawling!! Master of your own destiny / earnings, would love to take the leap but no got a large enough client bank as recently moved to a new area, few guys back in Cornwall set themselves up when I lived there but where talking 10 million in client bank before taking the leap some of course had in excess of this back this was what was being bandied around How you finding the RDR changes with Fee's/Commissions? rancer Posted February 8, 2011 Share Posted February 8, 2011 I was in the same situation a couple of years back. Was working at Northern Rock, in IT at the head office and began to get the itch. In fact I 'effing hated my boss and eventually my job, even though I was pretty good at it. Just after the Rock went down I left and joined the Police - possibly quite risky, given that I didn't know if I would like it or if I would be able to hack it or not. Happily, it was the best choice I've ever made. I love my job, the people I work with are great and at the PC / Sgt ranks there is next to none of the politics and BS that plague every other industry i've worked in. Im also extremely lucky to have gotten in before the cuts etc. There were only a couple more intakes after mine and now the last is coming to the end of their initial training. I'd love to switch jobs, but for me it's just not financally viable. I need money to effectively live and going back to college /uni would not be plausable as I'd have to give up my job. I guess the only saving grace if you work in a finance office is there might be some hot young admin girls to stare at Each to their own but to switch industries now without any experience might be tough, especially in the current climate.
