Is it worth buying a HR that's suffering from low oil pressure?

Hi all, I'm considering buying a HR, however it's been driven with low oil pressure (in the low single digits at idle, based on the dash guage). Good service history and condition otherwise.

How much risk does this issue pose for the engine? I'd plan on taking it to a specialist asap to have the gallery gaskets done if I bought it, however I don't really want to inherit an engine swap/ rebuild.

I've been looking online, but there seems to be conflicting information on whether the car being used in this condition will kill the engine.

It’s all depends, but realistically you should never drive something at all with low oil pressure, let alone something like this. The main questions I’d be asking is exactly how long ago did the low oil pressure start occurring - this must have been going on for atleast a fair while. Secondary what’s the service history like? if the service history is on point and it hasn’t been driven far or hard you might be alright- if it’s been ages and driven loads I’d personally avoid it. Your main issue is information - you’d both be best to meet in the middle on price if you are willing to buy it and just suck it up if worst comes to worse-  but depending on mileage be prepared for worst case scenario

As far as I know, oil gallery gasket issues can’t cause any engine damage, but can cause worse performance while the pressures low due to lack of advanced cam timing.

I had my gallery gaskets done at a garage called AB Autoworks in Halifax who work on a lot of these cars and when I asked if any damage had been caused the answer was no.

Service history is good, but as to whether it's been driven far or hard like this I can't say. But yeah it's not going to be cheap if it does have issues, which is making me hesitant.

If I could guarantee no damage has been caused, I'd be happy to buy it. I have no issues putting up with low performance until it's fixed, but I've read posts where people talk about it being harmful to the engine. Granted I've not personally heard about anyone with a ruined engine from gallery gaskets either.

I'll also have to look up AB Autoworks, Halifax isn't far from me. How much did they charge for the process?

Think it was 800 - 1000 I forget exactly.

Yeah I suppose it could be a risk. Some will say it won't cause damage others will say it can, but who really knows? Doubt anyone's stripping engines down to check. Just a bit of a gamble if you're willing to buy one.

Maybe think about giving a garage like the one i mentioned a ring or another well known specialist like Horsham Developments and get their opinion on the matter.

Personally, and I say this with a professional opinion also, if you have something like this and it’s saying you have low oil pressure then that means somewhere in the engine isn’t going to be getting its oil…. don’t leave it down to chance, like the others say just go for a different one if you’re not willing to take the risk

Id keep looking lots of superior examples. Nothing wrong with waiting until the right spec comes up. I waited 5 months ringing around for a used Nismo at the right price. Worth waiting for a cleaner example thats had the Gallery done. That would be even better.
