We currently have Amazon prime fire tv boxes and a Sky HD + multiroom , we use the Amazon box to watch Netflix and Prime and find that we rarely use the Sky anymore apart from F1 and I am tiring of that I would like to get rid of the Sky box and get a recordable freeview or freesat box any suggestions ? MJC Posted October 14, 2016 Share Posted October 14, 2016 You can side load Kodi onto an Amazon Fire (box or stick). Kodi is ok for tv series and films, but not so good anymore for live TV. You can also side load an app called Mobdro which is brilliant for live tv from almost any country- you can get Mobdro on android phones, but not iOS. I assume that Kodi box is the same as the amazon box ? I too dropped Sky some 6 years back due to the ever increasing cost and petty awful service back-up. Bought a Humax Foxsat when it first came out about 6 years for £300 and its been great and trouble free apart from the remote needing to be replaced once. Yes, I miss some of the motorsport but quite honestly most of the other Sky offerings, over and above what you can get on terrestrial + freeview, were wasted on us. This last 2 years ive had the full HD sky+ family pack, with movies etc. and im paying just £18.99 a month for it. Did have my broadband through them as well which was unlimited 20mb for about a fiver a month including line rental. However I have just switched that to 50mb BT Infinity which after cashback deals etc they are actually paying me £9 a month to have their broadband. I have freeview in the bedroom & a WD box in there for streaming and apps. I do have kodi on my media pc but seldom use it. Much cheaper than any of the standalone boxes and constantly updatable to the latest version. 100% recommend Mobdro for watching the live sports- f1 is always crystal clear... I used to have Sky before for years, when I was renting. And again, increasing costs etc just put me off, considering I mainly watch channels that available on freeview anyway, so was just a waste. So ideally want something that supports freeview channels + all films/series etc would be a big bonus. I can always just get a freeview box and Netflix on my PS4, but would rather have something with more options in 1 box, if that makes sense? I had Sky for many years and I got fed up with paying over £85 per month, so called them up and gave them a months notice, the last week of my notice I got many calls from their re-connection team. So we agreed on £25 - 00 per month for full Sky service including Movies, Sport, Sky + HD all channels, with no contract just a months notice. Does make me laugh how they're now generally referred to as Kodi boxes, like they contain some kind of magic: All they are pointing you to are video streams on the internet, available from anything* with a web browser. *iOS, as usual, is a little more fussy. Didn't realise there was a dual core one now, will have to look into that as one of the biggest downsides to the current one is that it's just not meaty enough. May be worth upgrading to 4K box? I believe it has rj45 port and a bit more meatier. Reviews suggests that it supports 4K streaming over wifi without any problems. No chance wifi can support full bitrate 4K, it struggles with 1080p. Theoretical limits on wifi are great, but in the real world it just won't cope. For Netflix-quality 4K though, it's probably fine. 4K is a very short lived fad, HDR offers far more benefits for a much lower cost for content producers, and a higher quality product for the end user too. But I digress, that's another rant for another day My ATV4 box is just about the best multimedia box I've used, but obviously you pay top dollar for it and it has limitations when you're trying to run hooky software/access pirate streams. For Plex and Netflix though, it's superb.
