ATTAK Z Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 I'm getting random highlighted text that takes me to adverts on my iMac whilst browsing this site ... have I pressed a button somewhere that's causing this to occur ? ... can I stop it ? ... any mac gurus that can help please ? Quote
Vlad Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 I think it's some kind of virus/malware. Have you installed any kind of new software recently? Or clicked on a dodgy link? I used to have that couple of years ago on my laptop (windows OS), but can't remember how I got rid of it. Probably just ran anti-virus/malware software to get rid of it. Quote
BobbyZ Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 As Vlad says, it'll be malware. Antivirus might remove it, but I think when it happened to me I had to find the offending software in Uninstall (on Windows) and get rid. Quote
ioneabee Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 erm ...... imac fellas, not MS windows - read the post Quote
Stutopia Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 Got a screenshot? CMD-SHIFT-3 on your Mac. If in doubt go here - https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/ Install and do a scan. It's good and free. Quote
Vlad Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 I did read it, thanks. That's why I specified it happened on Windows OS, but principle is same I would imagine! Quote
Adrian@TORQEN Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 Are you using Safari or other browser, eg Firefox, Chrome? Check if you have installed any browser add-on/extension. Feel free to PM or call me, I could have a look remotely. Quote

Fodder Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 Not familiar with iMac buton iOS there is an ad tracking option. I was also going to suggest chrome as I'm sure I've seen something similar when installing chrome albeit on Windows. Quote

As a matter of interest the word "Trader" above your avatar on your post is highlighted and when clicked, takes me to a website I haven't seen before "monGenie.com" ... your next post the word "Trader" is not highlighted I'm not blaming anyone but my granddaughter (aged9) was playing on the iMac as the last user a couple of hours ago Quote
ATTAK Z Posted January 3, 2016 Author Posted January 3, 2016 I'm on Firefox ... I'll just go and check Safari Quote

I don't use mac products - I know they suck, but I guess I just never imagined they could be so terrible that they have add-ons that are only available as malware on Windows Quote

Stutopia Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 Safari for normal browsing, Chrome for if you want to access flash content. Then you never had to install dirty, resource hungry, unstable flash software on your Mac and you can keep Chrome memory leaks to a minimum 1 Quote
