Definatley a good sunday DIY job how hard depends on one thing really and that is how is the stereo you have no been installed. If its been installed using proper ISO connectors its a simple case of unplug old HU plug in new one. If on the other hand its had the standard loom cut to fit the headunit you may need a little guidance on what wire is what but theres plenty ppl on here who can point you in the right direction. Thanks again for this advice. I'll keep on looking for an affordable HU and then see how it goes. As you say, there are plenty of knowledgeable people on here if I get stuck.

Sounds like someone to not take your car then As others have said - retaining the steering controls and BOSE system is not too hard. if your looking for a good screen with iPod function the Alpine W502 with the BT400 bluetooh unit guves you an awesome setup. Spend a bit more and go for the Kenwood 8220BT which also gives you the SatNav in there. Not as good an audio/iPod setup as the Alpine but you would get Navigation Thanks for the suggestions, but wasn't looking to spend that much on it.

I don't have the Bose - it's an after-market DD HU from Japan, and there are no steering wheel controls on mine.

I am getting really fed up with the after-market double din HU in my car - it came with the car from Japan - everything is in Japanese, the SatNav doesn't work, neither does the DVD, it has a redundant Mini-Disk player in the rear cubby and the radio reception is poor. I would like to replace it with a reasonably good quality unit that will give me good reception, can take an input for my iPod and play CDs. A touch screen would be desirable but not essential, as would bluetooth for the phone. My main issue is this - how difficult is it to replace the head unit? I am afraid I have been a bit daunted by some of the threads on here which show huge amounts of wiring and no clear instructions as to what goes where. Is it a DIY job for somebody with reasonable technical skills but no detailed knowledge of ICE? Alternatively, how much would you expect professional installers to charge for that type of job? Finally, any suggestions for a suitable replacement unit would be most welcome.

Hi marzman, Thanks, as I wrote the autobox shift is stuck in the manual gate position and i cant get it to move across to the D position. Correct me if I am wrong but the link you posted was for the shift being stuck in the park position, and you can move it out of this position with the shift lock button, mine is stuck in the manual side of the box but with no gears engaged. Can someone tell me if when you move the shifter across from A to manual mode as it crosses the gate is their any movement felt from the shifter ie-you feel it slightly raise up or down etc???? Thanks Just checked mine - there is an initial slight resistance and then it just pops straight across - no up or down movement.

Hi Jim Nothing in the square display and the car is in neutral so it can't be driven What I mean is, have you tried starting it up and moving the shift forward to engage a gear even though there is no light in the display? Apologies if I am stating the obvious and you have already tried all this.

I looked at that too but it's not exactly cheap, is it? Plus, I think it will be difficult to get it to fit exactly and look original.

Like the idea of the dimple affect standing out a bit more with the black I can see how that might appeal, but I am keen to have a go at smoothing the surface off and finising it in satin to match the other parts of the interior. The trouble is, I have no idea how to go about smoothing it off!

Have you tried driving it in manual mode?

Have you smoothed off the centre console or are you leaving it with the dimpled effect?

I seem to recall that someone on here used to keep it on all year round for that very reason!

I had to use the Comma stuff a couple of times last year before it cleared the smell completely - been fine ever since.

+1 but they are very expensive. Envy do the Varis for around £500 and the Veilside is about £350-£400, I think. JDM do some nice Seibon ones for £351. Not much on eBay, but I am always on the lookout for a decent second-hand example.

The top hose should not lose too much fluid but the other one might cause a bit of leakage uness you're really quick! I'll have a go at the weekend. Thanks for the suggestion. Any idea where the air lock valve is?

I got a new set of hoses recenty but not yet got round to fitting them. Is it difficult? Is the radiator drain tap easy to access? Cheers in advance for any advice offered.
