Mike1989 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I've recently discovered I need a new timing chain, I've searched the web to try and find one, without paying the £570+vat that main dealer want and come across them in the states for around 300 dollars! Would you leave well alone because that seems a lot cheaper, will quality be poor for that? Mike Quote
Neilp Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 How have you worked out you need a new chain? What issues are you having? Quote
Mike1989 Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 It cut out on me while I was driving and wouldn't start up again, so I thought it would be airflow problem so I pulled the sensor out and it started up but went into limp mode, so took it straight to a good mechanic I know, he plugged it in and said it was cam sensor, he replaced that but still wasn't right. Mike1989 Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 Then he said the timing was out on it. Quote
Neilp Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I think you are diving in too deep. I'd take it to one of the specialists on here who knows these cars inside out 1 Quote
Mike1989 Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 What else could it be though? If he's said the timing is out Quote
Darren-B Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 If the timing is out & you haven't taken the engine apart your engine is screwed & you will need more than a timing chain. What codes is the car throwing? Have you tried resetting the codes since you messed around by pulling plugs/sensors out? There are 2 cam sensors on a V6, did he replace the right one? 1 Quote
Mike1989 Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 Yeah am sure he changed the right one, I'm not sure what code its throwing out I just left the car with him and said sort it. Quote
ZMANALEX Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Best to take a step back Mike. What are the codes ? Is your guy referring to fuel timing, ignition timing, cam timing etc. Doubt if it will be any of the three chains. Alex. Quote
Mike1989 Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 Cam timing! Am not sure what the codes are, like I said he plugged it in and rang me saying it was can sensor! I rang him asking if it was done and then he said it wasn't that it was this Quote
ZMANALEX Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Best to take the car to some one who has excellent diagnostic skills to get an informed diagnoses and a fix. Alex. 4 Quote
Stu_2424 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Try to get some more info before trying to ask people to diagnose. It's more than likely your mechanic is wrong. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
flyboy Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I would listen to what Alex said there aren't many who know more. 2 Quote
M13KYF Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 take it to someone who knows what they are talking about. Good advice from ZMANALEX Quote
evilscorp Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Chain tensioner maybe on its way out? Have a look at YouTube as there are a few vids on 350z timing chains so you might solve the problem yourself. Quote
WhackyWill Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Totally agree with Alex, where are you based and somebody on here will recommend your nearest Zed expert. Quote
Mike1989 Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 Went see the mechanic today he said tgectimings out by 10 degrees! So it needs doing! Quote
Stu_2424 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I'd take it somewhere else for a second opinion Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
HARMLU Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Went see the mechanic today he said tgectimings out by 10 degrees! So it needs doing! Was this the same mechanic? Quote
HARMLU Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Dude, take note of what everyone is saying on here. We are only trying to save you wasting money. The last thing you want is to be paying labour for taking the engine apart.. It is not a straight forward job. You need to rule out absolutely EVERYTHING before going down the timing chain route. First of all what codes was the reader bringing up? Were these codes sprung after a reset? It is so rare for the timing chains to go on the zed. I, personally would be getting a second and a third opinion and most certainly not taking the opinion of one person as gospel. Even take it to a nissan stealer. They may charge you a few quid to plug your car in to their machine, but it will be money well spent. We are only trying to help and save your bank balance Quote
Mike1989 Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 Yeah dude I get that no worries! If it is the chain though and he's right about it being out by that it won't have caused any problems to the pistons etc? Quote
