Well if he's not selling anymore then rubber washers are the cheapest and easiest solution going, used them in mine just like the penny trick and they don't damage paintwork.

Does anyone know if you can DIY this spring replacement and where the springs can be got?

Take the spring out of yours and get a slightly longer, stiffer spring from a spring supplier.

 

yup that's pretty much the direction I'm going in. I'm just looking to skip the process of taking out the spring, driving somewhere to a find a spring supplier etc etc and just buy two off ebay

I think unless you can get hold of peteman or someone with his uprated springs then it's going to be trial and error.

 

I agree - See I went to do the penny mod only to find the previous owner has already been there (although there are only 2). I might fire in a couple of rubber washers and see what that does first.
