Low Entry Trolley Jacks?

Im looking into getting myself a proper trolley jack since the Halfords jobby that I keep borrowing off my Dad is now too tall to fit under both my 106 and my 350 :lol:

 

Happy to spend decent money on one as I know it will get a lot of use but wasn't sure if it was worth going with a light weight aluminium one or a regular (steel?) one.

 

Lightweight would be easier for me as I don't have a garage to work on the car in so it cant just be wheeled over to the car (will be stored in the shed and dragged/carry it across my gravel drive). On the other hand I've read people don't rate the aluminium ones because of their strength? I always use axle stands when I work on my car so the Jack is never the only thing taking the full weight so does that really matter?

Nothing wrong with Alloy jacks mate, we use both alloy and steel at work. Allow ones are great if your moving them around a lot. Strength has never been an issue with any of ours. You should never rely on a jack alone and always use axle stands while under a car :thumbs:

I have a nice big Clarke 2.5T Aluminium one, it was something like £155 from Machine mart and as fantastic! They do a slightly lower profile one for a little more money also but I've found mine fine and I have some low cars! It's generally ok but if not a plank of wood solves the problem. It has a nice big cup too :)

I also have a million blocks of wood of all shapes/sizes which get used for propping up various bits of car :lol: never thought to park on them!!

 

The ramps are good temporary solution actually while I decide on what to get. At the moment the 350 I just have to move around the drive until I find a dip that lets me get the jack under and the 106 I have to jack the rear then the front which is annoying if everything you want to get at is at the front :lol:
