Would I be right in thinking you can just get the bush from h-dev now? Pretty sure after reading the descriptions on here that this is what my problem is

As well paying the extra for the arm, the ball is the same age as the bush, by the time you pay for the extraction / replacing (if you dont have access to a press) you wont be far off it and you may be visiting the same corner again soon anyway... Both sides on mine went within a year more or less of each other, at least if you replace the arm its done and not a worry for another few years... My take anyway...

I have had same problem since buying my car, changing the arm next weekend, lets hope that is the knocking problem! This post has made me feel a bit better about spending the cash to sort it out! Thank you

If there is no excessive play from underneath am I wrong in thinking everyone is just changing them because they don't like the knocking sound , or isit because it's going to proply damage your car in not doing so

In case anyone is looking into the service manual, and this hasn't been declared already, "I-spy" a (non-)deliberate mistake in the Service manual diagram on P8 - regarding the compression rod.

Before I fess up....a blue peter badge to who works it out right and gets it first!!!

I have a loud knocking noise coming from the offside, jacked up and found no problem, reading the posts sounds like a banana arm, is it likely to be just this? where is the cheapest place to get one? Can I do it 'on the drive way' so to speak? Would I need any specialist tools?

Are any of the Traders on here able to source just the OE balljoint? There has to be a way of removing the old worn out one and replacing it with a new one, but unless new ones are available, there is no point in investigating this any further.

Steve

With no offence meant to the traders,I don't think they are bothered as long as replacement arms are available for then to supply or supply and fit. There are aftermarket arms available (quality unknown) for which balljoints have obviously been obtained from another source other than Nissan.

With respect I do not think that is the case.

The traders on here are very much bothered and we do our level best to serve you guys with quality products at huge savings and at times you have us jumping through hoops.

I find your comments offensive and uncalled for thumbdown.gif

So just to be clear:

The ball joint for the compression rod is not available on its own and if this ball joint fails, then you have no option but to purchase a complete new compression rod.

Alex.

I find your reply quite offensive, and no offence was intended by me I can assure you.

How much research have you put into the matter?

If,for instance,an engineering firm could be found who would recondition the arms with a suitable balljoint sourced elsewhere at say £100 each for a bulk order and a trader could order a batch to be made and sell them at,say, £150 each then that indeed would be a better service.By far the the highest value in the item must be the alloy arm itself, and this bit is perfectly serviceable yet is thrown in the scrap bin at the moment.

If you read my earlier post you would see that I had suggested as much but agreed that it might not be possible because such an exercise might cost out at more that the new arms anyway,in which case I would totally agree with you.

...and might I offer you some advice that it's not best business practice to get on your high horse unnecssarily with people like me who have already spent good money with you.

If it's so easy speedwell why don't you do it ?

ETA

You come over as a bit of a tit TBH ... let me have your engineering qualifications and I might back your idea

Well this is certainly an eye opening topic. I haven't had chance to take a good look at my new Zed but it does seem to rumble during urban driving. Investigation is required.

I am, however, curious as to how the arms themselves 'fail'. If they're corroded or warped then sure. Or is it simply the bush and ball joint that go? Because surely the ball joint can be replaced (I've seen some for sale, but talk of replacing the whole arm makes me suspicious).

But if the arms on my Z original then it's all coming up to being 8 years old so it's probably worth my time to put £500 aside (or less if I put my faith in eBay) and get the arms replaced rather than just doing the bushes and then having to be back underneath it in the future.

It's going to have to wait until the summer when I have some holiday time and money

Massive help from the forum as usual.

Well I've replaced both my bannana arms and drop links ad still have a knocking over bumps. Very annoying. There is also a knock if reversing and coming to a halt. It may be related.
