Vik91 Posted November 22, 2011 Share Posted November 22, 2011 Hi Everyone As im looking to buy a 350z when i turn 21 (march 2012) so i joined up on the forum to make sure i know what to look for when i come to buy a zed! 1. If i had to change the clutch would i need to also change the flywheel? (im not the best mechanical person in the world lol) 2. Are all 350z's chain driven? im looking to buy a 2003 - 2005 zed Those are the main two questions at the moment! I'm sure i'll think of a few more. Feedback much appreaciated! coldel Posted November 22, 2011 Share Posted November 22, 2011 As much as you want to ask questions about mechanicals and electricals - ring around your insurance companies first if you havent already insuring a zed isnt cheap if you are a younger driver and have seen a few people on here save up for one buy it then realise its another £2k to insure And welcome! Vik91 Posted November 22, 2011 Author Share Posted November 22, 2011 Thanks for the replies I've checked the insurance and it's £1154 while it's £1500 for a clip 182 :S My main concerns is the clutch which is as you say catching it at the right time for the flywheel! coldel Posted November 22, 2011 Share Posted November 22, 2011 Not sure you need a specialist to change a clutch - just check the traders on here (ZMANALEX is a good start) to price up the parts and then any reputable garage should be able to unhook the gearbox etc and switch the clutch over. Should take 4-5 hours max I reckon? If you have an eye on a car already, maybe post some details of it on here and people can give opinions etc (you dont have to show the actual ad if you want to keep it to yourself ) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
rabbitstew Posted November 22, 2011 Share Posted November 22, 2011 In my experience of other cars, a clutch is a clutch and a flywheel is a flywheel. Ive never had to replace a flywheel just because a clutch has gone. Normally when a clutch goes it starts slipping, and you notice it straight away. You can even live with it a few weeks because the car is still driveable. Its a case of replacing the pressure plate and off you go. But, maybe the zed is different? Is it just me, or is this about the 3rd thread from someone who is 21 and buying a zed?! Just goes to show that these cars are becoming more and more affordable! coldel Posted November 22, 2011 Share Posted November 22, 2011 My clutch went, but I was in cornwall at the time I had to drive hundreds of miles back to London, by which point it was slipping like crazy. Sometimes you get lucky, the flywheel is ok, but if you don't order it and you spend hours opening the transmission up and find the flywheel is damaged then you have wasted a lot of time and money as you will have to order another one and do it another day. Most dealers will (hope I am not dropping anyone in it here!) allow you to return an unopened flywheel if you dont fit it...so order both, if you need it fit it, if not send it back unopened. As an aside, if the clutch is slipping, it usually is already too late to save the flywheel ... ... and yeah, lots of younger drivers picking up Zeds, maybe more powerful cars are becoming relatively cheaper. At 21 I was in a 1.1L Fiesta with insurance of £850, more than I pay now on my Zed, that was 16 years ago! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

When I was 20 and living in rural Wales I was paying £1200 for a 2.0 Prelude, didn't mind though as I loved that car Hope you find the right Zed! Lots of nice well prices and well looked after zeds on here. Most people are willing to help check new cars out for new members etc so don't keep quiet, let everyone know and most of us will do as much as we can to help out. As for the flywheel, its always been recommended to change the flywheel with the clutch. Most people who have ordered new clutches will end up having to replace the flywheel soon after which means double labour costs. Cheers Hi mate I'm with admiral multicar but on a policy with about 130k worth of cars on it. We have 5 cars on it which brought it from 700 to around 600 for the year. My Suzuki swift sport wonly most as much as the zed at 400 for the year. It's my area I'm in. Oh just realised in 24 now, not 23. We live in a reasonably quiet village which is why my insurance is cheaper. If I move to the next village I'm alot more as its a shithole. Are the stereos and speakers any good? I find my Bose more than adequate if you play about the settings. I play alot of grime, r&b, hip hop and dance they all sound fine. Plenty of bass also.
