seech Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Do Z's have these? A Nissan mechanic told me this. But as it is not an all-out lightweight racer, I didn't think it was the case. A quick Google appears to confirm hearsay with other hearsay on other forums. Is it true? Would this not be the most expensive component in the car if it was?! Quote
Toon Chris Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Mine looks like it is made out of 100KG of pig iron. Quote
chippychip123 Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Don't know but it is very light, especially for the girth of it didn't look much like carbon from memory though Quote
Steady Zeddy Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 I remember when the Zed first came out that this was mentioned in several car magazine articles but from looking at it under the car you wouldn't think there was any carbon involved. Quote
Chris`I Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Its carbon reinforced plastic or cabon composite material of some kind. Quote
M13KYF Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 always thought they were after the media articles but never actually studied one Quote
Chris`I Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Too light to be metal if you've picked one up. Also says in the service manual to replace it if dropped, and that wouldnt be an issue with metal, more composite materials that fracture/splinter when dropped. Quote
djtimo Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Its carbon guys, just like how a racing yatch's mast is made. Quote
Husky Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Its carbon guys, just like how a racing yatch's mast is made. +1 you can see the layers if you look closely Quote
bronzee Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Was quite a touted sales thing too, when they were new for those of us that have had ours for years. Quote
coldel Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 When my clutch got changed recently they handed me the propshaft to move out of the way, didnt realise I was carrying a carbon fiber piece of race spec material...and it was on my car...honoured. Quote
Daryl Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I didnt know this until i had my first service last year. Pretty shocked to to be honest, but sure enough,if you tap it,its carbon. Quote
rabbitstew Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I never knew that. You learn something new each day. Thats one for me to boast to my mates about now! Quote
BulletMagnet Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Yeah, local garage pointed it out to me the first time she went up on ramps. Mech said, "Wow, that's one fat CF propshaft!!!" I swear he fell in love with it, lol Here's a pic of one, in case you haven't seen one yet Quote

Steady Zeddy Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Does anyone have a handle on the replacement cost? I reckon it'd be saucy. Quote
