cerealuk Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I have the same noise on my car. started about a month ago and have chosen to ignore it till reading this post... now a bit worried I get the noise when the car is in neutral with clutch out and it seems to disappear when i push the clutch in. Thinking I best get it checked out. How do they tell if its the release bearing, is it a case of try it and see and if it doesn't work then take the gearbox apart? Lastly can I cause any further/worse damage by driving it as it is.... Seems like a catalogue of problems this month with handbreak needing tightening, airbag light coming on and this... bloody good job the car makes me smile! Quote
shire350Z Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 When you have the gearbox out if the shaft is loose that goes into the flywheel that's when you know the bearing needs replacing and if your doing that one while the box is apartyou might as well do the rest! Your as well having a new clutch release bearing there as if it is that then you can get it swapped straight away. If you leave it, it could just cause the gearbox to sease up and damage more parts, so best getting it looked at Quote
shire350Z Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 Well the gearbox was fitted today and took out on a test run and in second gear with low revs if you put your foot down theres a tinny noise (the garage have told me) so its back out and down at the transmission place again Quote
Wasso Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Let's hope it's something minor that's causing the noise and can be resolved quickly and of course cheap! Quote
shire350Z Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 They think it could be how its been re-positioned if its not quite sat exactly right on the dowels as you cant see them as it goes back down! something like that anyway shouldnt cost me anymore really there **** up Quote
Will370z Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Cerealuk I wouldn't necessarily panic, the noise you mention is consistent with a noisy thrust release bearing - see thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39680. If you are worried though it may be worth checking out but it seems common to the car. Quote
shire350Z Posted August 19, 2010 Author Posted August 19, 2010 Got the car back yesterday and alls well so ill see you all at Zedfest (whoever's going) Quote

M13KYF Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 what was the total cost in the end James if you dont mind posting Quote
shire350Z Posted August 19, 2010 Author Posted August 19, 2010 alot cheaper than you guys may think!!! Got the box fully checked and all the bearings replaced for £500 and my local garge who do all the work on my Zed (well its the same mechanic every time) only charged me £90 for taking the box out re-fitting and filling with 3litres of all So if anyone has a problem with the gearbox come see me Quote
spursmaddave Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Glad it's all sorted without too much expense Quote
