coldel Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 Chap parked up outside (yes badly) but what is that attached to the outside of the wheel? Spacer mod gone wrong? It seems to have bolts running through to the hub? Quote
brillomaster Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 (edited) is it not just missing the cap that normally hides the wheel nuts? PS a bigger picture would help... Edited April 21, 2017 by brillomaster Quote
coldel Posted April 21, 2017 Author Posted April 21, 2017 Maybe needs a bigger pic, it appears to be a spacer type thing, bolted to the outside of the wheel? Quote
Apoc124 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 possibly a security thing to cover the wheel nuts to stop people pinching the wheels? 1 Quote
coldel Posted April 21, 2017 Author Posted April 21, 2017 Could be, good shout that - although someone has nicked the ones off the other three wheels! Just in the pub at the moment, will get a better pic on the way home! Quote
BobbyZ Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 Yeah I was thinking maybe a security device, but TBH I'd rather just run steel rims if I was that worried because that looks bloody ugly. Quote
leonk Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 My guess is that he's been for some sort of laser alignment, suspension geometry check or wheel arch rolling and the muppets forgot to remove part of the equipment?? 2 Quote

I think this is probably one of the best guesses although I've looked online and can't find anything similar. I did wonder if maybe it was some sort of emergency "get you home" kit for cars with alloys wheels who'd lost their wheel nuts, ...adjustable for different PCD's on alloys. Quote
BobbyZ Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 So, a substitute for wheel nuts that offers absolutely no benefits (as far as I can tell) over a spare set of wheel nuts? 1 Quote
ConnorW06 Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Damn, these look great! Put me down for a group buy! Quote

If you read my post correctly you'd notice that I said; "emergency "get you home" kit for cars with alloys wheels who'd lost their wheel nuts. So that would be the benefit. Quote
88 Zed Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Possibly part of a slide hammer for removing wheels or hubs that have siezed on? Quote

I think Bobby is saying if you keep one of these for that type of emergency you may as well keep a spare set of nuts in the car.... probably take up less space and safer too. I think it's something to do with a jig/alignment type of check and the muppets forgot to take it offf.... they are probably searching their workshop high and low for them right now Quote
coldel Posted April 22, 2017 Author Posted April 22, 2017 If I see the owner I will ask...I am so desperate for them to say they are wheels spacers, then challenge myself to keep a straight face... Quote

Yes true of course but I was thinking more like from an RAC or AA van where it just wouldn't be viable to have every vehicles type of wheel nut. Either way I know I'm wrong and it's more likely as leonk mentioned. 1 Quote
leonk Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Leave a note asking? Preferably with a link to this thread, so the owner can see the intrigue (and potential arguments) they've caused. 1 Quote
chippychip123 Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 At a guess I would say that it's the base plate for some type of modern snow chains, if you google spike spider snow chains you'll see they click onto a plate just like this. Although some of the guesses did make me laugh, 2 Quote

leonk Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Well done Chippychip!! I can sleep now without Googling thousands of wheel thingy images ultimately ending up on some dodgy site with latex clad dwarves strapped to a ferris wheel. 1 Quote
