Engine swap

According to my mechanic my big ends have gone and my engine it making a terrible racket (at 86k after a service...) I've only done 4k since buying the car. It's an 05 Gt4 around how many hours are involved in the swap? I think I've located an ok engine vq35der I'm just trying to work out the mechanics bill... also will I need to replace the oil pump and where can I get a genuine nissan one that won't pull my pants down on price. Are there any other parts that would be ideal to change/upgrade in the process?

Thanks

Alex

When buying a "replacement" engine straight from one thats been in a crash etc, you should get everything unless stated.

Also remeber (you mechanic will proberbly tell you) you also need to consider new service parts, all engine fluids, oil filter, aux belts, and to be honest might aswell do spark plugs aswell while you are there.

In terms of price, I had an engine swap done nearly about 6 months ago.

Costs £2500 for engine VQ35DE 40,000 ish, about £900 for labour, engine out, engine in, and another £200 for service parts.

Just make sure it doesnt smoke. Good Luck.

Firstly your GT4 will have the rev up motor so make sure that is what you are replacing it with.

It is a days work.

You could replace the oil pump, however most do not.

Also budget in a grand for a clutch and fly swop.

Cheers mate. Yeah it's a rev up engine from a gt4 I've located. Is it best going oem with the clutch and flywheel or should I swap to single mass fly?

The current engine has had new belts and plugs within the last 2 months so that should be cool... Hopefully I can do something naughty with the blown motor if it isn't too far gone.

Also is this the time to go with tubular manifolds been as the engine is out?

What happened to the engines you guys replaced? I bought a 350 over a 200sx because I read almost everywhere that the engines and boxes are pretty bullet proof.. not pleased! I've only done 4k odd miles and run it on v power the entire time :(

Quite a lot of DE's have been going pop on here recently. Still on the whole I'd imagine it's much more reliable than the 200SX.

Did you buy the car private sale?

Yeah was a private sale sold as seen. Did all the checks. It'd been serviced every 8 or 9k and I had it for what I seen as good money 6,500 with 83k on the clock. Had a service from my local garage about 2 months ago... I think there must have been thicker oil in and a bit of omitted information because there's no way I've done the big end in my period of ownership

I bought mine with all the checks etc.. on 118k though, engine went around 135, i think if the engines have been mistreated at an early age the damage is probably already done.

Just out of interest how much could I get for a gt4 with a blown engine complete car?

Best guess about £2000.

£500 for blown engine?

£500-600 for used working gearbox?

£500-600 for used GT4 RIMs?

£££ Rest scrap metal?

I've bought an engine now with 53k on it. So there's no going back now.. haha

I may as well do the clutch at the same time. I have a receipt for a new clutch in the car at 30k which might explain why it's blown now... :/

Where is the best place to get a clutch and DM flywheel from? Are there traders on here that can do a deal? I'll be doing mainly road driving with the occasional but of enthusiasm so I don't think a single mass fly will be worth it.

Has anybody got tubular exhaust manifolds? Is it worth it been as the motor is gonna be out? Anybody have any for sale?

And finally is there a chance I could rebuild the old motor? Or is there no going back from big end failure?

  • 5 weeks later...

I've got the clutch and single mass flywheel (thanks zmanalex for the advice and speedy delivery) and the engine is waiting at the garage but the work can't be started for 2 weeks. So I've been reading up and I'm looking to get a stainless y piece to compliment my nismo system and maybe some high flow cats

Only thing is though the only place I've seen these for sale is japspeed. Are these the only or best option? Seen some on ebay but I'm unsure on the sellers and quality.

The car has 86k on it. Do cats tend to go and at what mileage?

Next thing I was looking at was stainless braided and sleeved clutch hose and slave and master cylinder. The only hose I seen was a DIF one and from what I've searched they are only available in USA. Is there a UK based equivalent? Also where is the best place to get the cylinders from?

Japspeed are deemed the cheapest branded make of exhaust system, like most things you pay for what you get.

As for Y-Pipes:

Japspeeds are ok I guess.

If you want no flexi Y-Pipe check out the "Stillen Y-Pipe"

With flexi check out: "Motordyne XYZ Y-Pipe"

As for HFC:

Berk HFC tend to be the favorite.

More good make are: Invidia, Cobra, Kinetex

Have seen some people go some mixed combos like: Berk HFC, Stillen Y-Pipe and Invidia Backbox.

As for Cats, only ever seem them go bad from excessive overfueling, mainly from a misfire of some kind.

There was a stillen y pipe for sale on here a week or so ago. Surely not having a flexi would make the exhaust crack? Also the berks HFC say they are for forced induction use. Would there be any gains on having them on a N/A engine?
