If your after a decent mortgage rate/deposit forget the car and just focus on saving, in the long run it works out so much better. As others have suggested get a decent mortgage rate, and it can also act like a cheap loan for the future. Also if your trying to save money, don't buy a BMW, selling my old 335i was probably the best financial decision I've made regarding cars ever .

Buying a car on a private plate - help!
gangzoom replied to brillomaster's topic in Off Topic Discussion
When I sold the BMW, it went quicker than I thought, so still had private plate on the car. I had sent off the retention certificate, so had no V5, and it was coming up to 2 weeks so due letter back any a day, but hadn't arrived when the buyer turned up to buy/collect the car. Buyer was in the police, he told the V5 is not proof of ownership, we did a quick letter documenting the situation - IE: I will retain the plate, and send the V5 off once I got it back from the DVLA. In the mean time he paid me ££££ for the the car, and took up any responsibility regarding speeding tickets, insurance on my private plate etc. I was a bit apprehensive at first, but after he showed me his police ID thingy and explained it to me for the 5th time I was happy, so we he transferred the ££££ into my account and drove off in the car with no V5/MOT documents . -
power for garage - project solar garage
gangzoom replied to jumping350's topic in Off Topic Discussion
It's a 'powerwall' essentially a 10kWh battery pack for 'storing' energy generated from solar panels. Up to 9 be 'linked' up to make a 90kWh storage unit. There's an 'industry' version that can be scaled to MegaWatt size!! -

Very impressive work... Now you just need one of these (not the car ). You wouldn't get much change from £3000, and there's already a 12 month waiting list -
I know a 91 year old who still has a race license, and takes his MG out on the track on a monthly basis

I'm the first to admit am a hippocrit, as much as I find the concept of getting money for doing nothing (ie: investment) a odd situation, I'm actively looking to put our savings into as profitable investment portfolio as possible....And if I can build up a big enough portfolio to let me retire by 45-50, great. But surely if every did this who's actually going to any real 'work'....Unless you can find cheap labour from near by countries

I'm all for rewarding hard work. I'm haven't got the financial position of been able to think about buying a £60k car out-right, and been mortgage free before 35 by sitting on my bum doing nothing....Infact last summer apart from the road trip to Europe, every free weekend was spent doing work (May through to end of August,)....This summer is unfortunately looking the same, but that Tesla P85D is just too damn tempting What I don't think its correct when people who have gained enough wealth can essentially 'insulate' themselves from society and almost stop contributing to society and essentially keep all the wealth to themselves. Our household financial situations means I've actually started to look into some of these things such as 'hedge funds' etc....and the returns on some of these products are crazy, 10-12%, good luck getting that kind of return on your high street bank....BUT price of entry is $100k mark, and for the 'proper' hedge funds which currently return 20%+, you need $1 million minimum....So how is it any where near 'fair' on society for people to be getting a 20% (x 10 the best ISA rate) on a $1 million investment for essentially doing nothing???. Because that is what's happening. If you got a $1 million hedge fund, you can go and buy a $200k car every year, for doing nothing....If your really clever your buy something limited like an Enzo, and you can double your money again for just 'storing' it.... The example I gave about 'cash back ' from high street banks been enough to pay for water-gas-electricity is to show how the system as it is means, if you have enough wealthy you can add to it WITHOUT doing any extra work....Essentially you can take all the advantages of society without contributing. Those people who can work but choose not to clearly need to be 'motivated' to change their behaviour
-
So what can people do?? I haven't got a clue....I honestly don't think any politican from any party could do anything to change things. Guess we'll all just have to go along with it all and see what happens

The growing disparity between the wealthy elite and everyone else is again a problem the whole world ecnomoy needs to tackle. The BBC news ran a piece this moroning how the a £50million piece of art was a 'fantasic' investment. Globally the super eltie are conslidating more and more wealth. http://www.bbc.co.uk...siness-30878840 If you look at every sector in life, the more wealth (actual wealth, not debt) you have the more you generate. Just look at cars, all stuff aside about EV vs ICE cars, if you have £60K+ cash (not debt) to spend on a car, you can go buy a Tesla, the govement will give you £5K off, you can than drive it around London congestion charge free, fill up for free, park it up in your allocated parking (because you own a £5 million flat), probably have clever enough accountants to claim back 50% tax on the initial purchase price and write off against tax etc. So you can get to/from work in comfort, for very little cost, and be relaxed at home, with more time to think about how to add to your wealth... Compare this to the rest of the people working in London. You cannot afford to buy a house/flat near where you work. so you buy/rent a house far away, so you take public transport/commute, annual tube pass is £1800 just for Zone 1 - 4, congestion charge is £10/day. You than have to spend 2-3hrs a day commuting to/from work, whilst all this time your boss is stilling in his/her central London flat spending £0 on travel/commuting costs whilst getting to drive around in a £60K car, which once all the figures are added up, is probably costing your boss less to run per month than your 1.6 Ford Focus...oh the house/flat your boss lives in...That's probably gone up about 50% in value in the last 5 years. Even for things as basic as energy costs, plenty of people stuggle to pay for their water/gas/electricty bills, yet if you have £40K to stick into 2 Stander 1-2-3 accounts, the interest+cash back you get from those accounts will more than cover your annual water/gas/electricty bills....So again, if you have the wealth and know who to use it (opening a Stander 1-2-3 account is hardly difficult), you can essentially not worry about spending a single £ of actual earned income on water/gas/electricty. I'm have no idea how you tackly social inequality, and we all know, 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others'. and life as whole isn't fair. But I can bet most politicans, what ever party, couldnt care-less about these issues, or if they do care, equally have no idea on what to do...
-
Let's face it, all politicans from what ever party are all two faced, ego-driven, power mad, upper class money grabbing, eton-oxbridge graduates. At least Boris Johnson doesn't prend to be some kind of 'normal' working class hero that 'understands' the problems of the common pleb. Anyone who has so little diregard of his personal apperance, and speaks so frankly about his personal views (regardless of who he upsets) gets my vote - What ever party he is in

You do know the whole world is in debt to some one else, there is no chance any country can ever clear it self of debt, reducing the deficit it nice but it will make next to no difference on the debt burden. The only chance to really clear the debt came at the last crash, IF the government had fhe balls to let the banks collapse (instead of just printing more non-existent money) and defaulted on its debt payments. I really struggle to understand how the world economy has got it self in the position it's in. 200 years ago the concept of global was nearly non-existent. If some one owned you money or you ran out of money just invade someone and take over that country, simple, and worked well for the British Empire. The 'magic' of the current financial system is far too complicated for my brain. For example how can some hedge funds return a 10-15% interest in the middle of a recession, with low inflation and low national interest rates ?? I'm sure some people here understand it all properly, but politicians haven't got a clue, and none will ever have the balls to put in reforms radicals enough to sort out the global debt problem, and it is a global problem not just a UK issue. Current world debt levels.... http://www.economist.com/content/global_debt_clock

Bring on 2020....I don't care what come out of his mouth or politics he practices, the fact he cycles like a nutter is enough to get my vote .

Nice looking Cat C repaired car: Looks nice but not sure I would pay money knowing this is what it looked like pre-repair

Didn't expect this amount of defection from the Lib Dem voters!!....Where have all the support gone?? Loosing the independence referendum has been the best thing for the SNP votes....At this rate England will be all Blue. Still better the devil you know...

Looks like the far right and far left will be joining together to push for PR at the next election....You got to love how ironic life can be!!

So what's with issues with the build quality of JLR cars?? I have to say one of the reasons we went to Lexus instead of Jaguar as a replacement car for the wife was based on the impressive reliability of Lexus compared to JLR who seem to finish bottom at every kind of follow up survey... Surely nearly all new cars are mass produced using the same robots, production lines, what's different about how Lexus put their cars together compared to JLR?? One day I still hope to own a JLR product, on the whole the car designs are the best in every segment (XE excluded ), but the constant bad customer reports means I have very little confidence in spending £60k+ on a brand that seems to struggle to deliver on longterm build quality?? In-a similar note I wouldn't be buying another BMW again either based on the rubbish reliability of the 335i....I just don't understand in an age of near automated production lines how quality can vary so much from company to company??

At last something sensible from them. British cars only yeah? Oh crap, given I currently drive a Japanese Electric car I better start doing the paper work for a immigration permit on the thing....Oh wait but it's built in the UK, maybe if I paint some St George's cross on the number plates I can sneak it pass the immigration police

Not at all jealous, is it the parent-in laws?? If that belonged to my parent-in laws I'll be asking to visit them every free bank holiday weekend, like any good son-in law would

Sweden and Norway Road Trip '15 - Write Up & Pics
gangzoom replied to Stutopia's topic in Off Topic Discussion
Looks amazing!! Shame to hear the Atlantic road is not all that amazing...Given Norway's love of EVs, I've already penciled in our Norway road trip for summer 2017....To help break in the Tesla The Atlantic road was a big part of it, if it's not all that amazing may have to change plans....Life is full of hard decisions sometimes -
Look on Google maps and your see there is a whole load of roads which all look like cooked spaghetti!! Furka pass is awesome, I did three times, but it's almost a case of driving in any direction that's not a Motorway and your find perfect roads/scenery.
-
You don't need to worry about me, I see the whole world as massive job market, and both me and the wife have got the skills/qualifications needed to go pretty much anywhere without too much hassle, and neither of us feel any loyalty to any one nationality. Which may be why clearly I see things different from some of you guys. It would be a-shame to leave the UK though, because it's where I've learnt my skills, but I don't see any part of life as been a constant, things changes, and you have to adapt.
-
Hence I never cycle on the edge of the road

There's no point in me debating this issue, unless your an ethic minority your never have a clue what 'Racisms' or 'Discrimination' actually means.

Do you read the daily mail by any chance? I'm not voting ukip, but what you've written is completely incorrect. Incorrect in what way?? Have you and kids point at you and tell you 'go home'... Have you had your car vandalised because your family was the only 'non-white' family on the street?? Have you had rocks thrown at your window for no apparent reason?? I've heard enough from UKIP to make up my own mind, like I've said, we're lucky enough to have the resources to 'go back home' should I feel the need to.
-
I don't really care who wins...But if UKIP get any significant number of seats me and the wife will be seriously consider giving up UK citizenship and moving back to SE Asia, most likely Singapore. I've always felt an underlying degree of racism in most UK cities (which is 'normal'/ to be expected), but the popularity of UKIP just confirmed my fears. Having UKIP win any large number of seats is a clear message to the world that the UK doesn't want foreigners, and if your not white, and anglo saxon than you should be treated as a second class citizen. I for one am not going to let my family hang around in a country shifting to the far right....History has shown that a strong nationalist movement is often the pre-requisite to some rather horrible things I know that's probably what UKIP voters wants any way, that way we immigrants can vacate our jobs for hardworking 'British' people....Good luck finding 'British' people who want to work 78hrs shifts in the NHS!!
