  1. Great line Zeus!! Do you sand it before oiling or just afterwards? It seems very rough at the moment (straight out of the box). Do you have any specific oil and wax in mind? I am guessing that he should look for water based wax if such a thing is available? We have white sofas and pale carpets and I really don't want wax all over them
  2. It's made of maple and you can obviously paint it but it would look good sanded and waxed or whatever. I like the idea of doing it the traditional way a la Hugh's suggestion because violins always look nice and I like a bit of cooking so I could help. I love waxing wood too (although that comment may be misinterpreted knowing my luck on here ). All my doors are waxed at home and I did the kitchen beams too and I think they look great. It is a very theraputic thing to do
  3. Hmm, Googling rock candy returned one very unexpected result Apart from that it looks like the sugar on those sticks that you get to put in coffee and gum arabic seems easily obtainable in art shops so maybe this is the way forward. Will pass recipe on
  4. Thanks Zeus. The guitar doesn't have hairy legs but waxing it sounds great, unless I go for Hugh's recipe! What is rock candy when it's at home? Sounds very American. I'm not even really sure what gum arabic is if I'm being honest. Honey, eggs and water are easy enough to obtain though. I will Google the unusual ingredients and let Mr Two Bears know
  5. Erm, put like that I think I agree I meant to say that he wants a matt finish but not a matt varnish if possible.
  6. It was Mr Two Bears' birthday this week and I got him a 'build yourself a guitar' kit that he had had his eye on for a while. It doesn't look too complicated because most components are pre-made but it is a bit harder than making up flat pack furniture, apparently Anyway, it doesn't come with any instructions (deliberately) and he is scratching his head over what to paint/dye/stain it with. He wants to wax or oil the wood so that you can still see the grain but I think that both of those treatments will wear off and get onto the strings etc. Does anyone have any ideas please? He doesn't really want to varnish it because he doesn't want a gloss finish or even the more matt finish that you can obtain with some types of varnish.
  7. I am glad that Scotland are still with us but I do feel sad that nearly half of the population will be angry that they are not independent I hope that it doesn't cause further divisiveness.
  8. I've no direct experience but Mr Two Bears is the CTO of a global automotive data company and, like you, he started as a programmer and worked his way up. Because he is so senior he now gets new roles by being head hunted but in the past I think he used to get promoted by doing exactly what you seem to be doing i.e. working over and above what your role demands. Have you approached your line manager and discussed your ambitions? Is there the possibility of further promotion within your current company, even if you have to wait until someone else is promoted or leaves or have you reached the top of the tree in your particular area? I'm guessing you must have regular appraisals with your line manager so why not raise the question of promotion? Maybe you should ask for a one to one meeting next week and prepare your pitch over the weekend? Tackled carefully I think it could net you a good result. Good luck
  9. It's an interesting debate i.e. that no-one should have anything that they cannot afford to buy for themselves but it seems fundamentally flawed, perhaps because I am a housewife with no income If Mr TwoBears took your argument to its logical conclusion he would be eating out tonight in a fancy restaurant whilst I sat at home eating macaroni cheese. Oh wait, that is exactly what IS happening I think Andy is just being a nice Dad though and I would do exactly the same for my own child. In fact, I just bought her a brand new car for her 21st, taxed and insured it for her and I pay for all her fuel!! I also let her and her boyfriend live rent free in my house but in return they do a lot of work for me, not paid work as such but they certainly get a lot of 'freebies' and we are all happy with the arrangement. I guess every family is different?
  10. Aw, sorry to hear that Hope he can get another test booked soon.
  11. Thanks Will. I'll always have happy memories of my first (and only) Wales trip
  12. I'm sure I will post a review for you to show to your good lady wife Colin KyleR, I know for a fact I haven't got any useful knowledge for the next generation and I will never join any Zed bashing club 'cos I have had the most fun ever with mine I'm sure you're only joking though
  13. Thanks GM. It's been a while since I had a test drive but I'm sure I'll love it
  14. Not sure you'd suit suspenders matey so I'd better admit to awaiting delivery of a pretty little ST3 in my favourite colour - blue The current Fiesta still has that new car smell and I can't believe that I am being so fickle but I should just have got the ST3 in the first place instead of trying to be all grown up and sensible. To make matters worse I actually bought not one but two staid and sensible Fiestas a few weeks back and immediately realised I'd made a mistake. Cue one very happy daughter on her 21st birthday though. Filled car with Hello Kitty balloons and banners and she's well chuffed with her new wheels
  15. I'm sure you've loved our chats Andy - what's not to like I've not gone mad and bought the 4C (well, not yet) but I have PX'd Mr Zed and my 12 week old Fiesta to get myself a new baby to drive. I am known for my impulsive nature and probably for being a mad old lady as well but it keeps me happy
  16. Have just taken the decision to PX Mr Zed for a little Fiesta so will ask Mods to remove my ad. That was a short-lived experience
  17. Well I've just agreed to part with Mr Zed as I've put down a deposit on my next car but maybe I will still hang around. I don't come in here a lot but it's nice to know that I can pop in for a chat when I feel like a bit of a chat
  18. Ha ha, I know I won't be marched out but it won't seem right to be here without a Zed. I am hoping to get myself another fun car but I don't think I will get another Zed because I am getting too old
  19. Mr Zedley is up for sale and this time I am really going to go through with it I will be sorry to say "goodbye" to the forum because there are some lovely people on here and I have enjoyed popping in for a chat. I am not managing to drive Mr Z anything like as much as I want though and parking is a headache here in Surrey so I think I am doing the right thing. I will say goodbye properly once I am Zedless but I am feeling a bit emotional already because this really was the car I have enjoyed driving the most in my whole life
  20. I just wrote out an ad for Mr Zedders whom I have decided to sell because I am no longer getting the chance to drive him and then I pressed something and the whole lot disappeared - oops Anyway, I have just had him professionally detailed by Divine Detail (Ed) in Surrey so he looks beautiful. He is completely standard save for some pretty blue engine bolts and a new gear knob. I have had him regularly serviced and use the more expensive petrol (even though I still don't know what it does exactly?) and he has had new rear tyres recently. I am not technical in the slightest as you may have guessed so if you are interested in making an offer please PM me and I will do my best to answer or find someone who can! For photos please see link and scroll down to see the finished article. http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/89420-twobears-blue-350z-full-detail/ Thanks for looking. Annie
  21. Colin, that is definitely the right thread but, unfortunately, as Andy says, I can't view it either.
