when the light comes on that basically means your running now oil around all the essential parts. Your grinding metal against metal with no oil to lubricate and to prevent damage. Level is a very different thing to pressure. How does it let you know if its level or pressure? Is it on start up it tells you the level then when running it pressure? edit... just seen you reply while I was typing. 5w-30 it is then

i hope for your sake it oil level indicator and not oil pressure indicator. Normally its oil pressure. If it is and you've been driving around with it like that you may have goosed your engine. does your car have a DPF? This is a diesel particulate filter (part of the exhaust) if it does then you want some 5W-30 oil for Diesel Engines
