any advice or where im going wrong?

Royal mail have charged me £50.58 VAT because HMRC charged them it on customs to them which is finend i get it

but the item was for a total of $42.88 or in good old british pounds about £28

How can the VAT be more than the item itself shouldnt it be 20% of $42.88 plus handling charge of £8

am i wrong here

The label on package has £ 0 for everying just 50.58 in vat

Royal mail just said we charge what we're charged and that's how it works

Hmrc I can't speak to anyone

Import tax varies depending what the item is.

Take the cost of the item, add shipping.

Then add 20% Vat on that.

Then add import tax on top (around 4% usually).

Someone has labelled or read the cost of your item incorrectly I reckon.

So how do I try and sort this as both organizations don't seem to wanna know

because its a shed load of work for someone at either organisation

Good luck. You're trying to sort something out between the two most incompetent entities in the UK.

But yeah, if the item cost you £28 shipped then you owe about £12 in extras (VAT + import duty + RM handling fee).

Considering Royal Mail has charged you an administration fee as well, ask them to resolve the issue. Express the goods value, your calculations based on the detail from Lexx and the amount you wish to be refunded.

THEN - charge Royal Mail £50 for your administration fee, or you'll take them to court for being arseholes!!

What's their handling fee? I guessed at a fiver, but it could be twice that.

Still doesn't add up, mind.

I've been charged £7.50 before and £15.00 I think it depends if it's a half pleb or full pleb dealing with the package.

Try Sky and BT........ I have a lot of hate for these companies.

Determine what you should be paying before you argue the point.

Import duty varies considerably on different items. So work it out then add the 20% VAT

In the past, my daughter has purchased dresses from the U.S. thinking they were cheap, and had to pay 3 times the cost of the dress in import duties and VAT :scare:
