GT4 Zed
Christ Tim! Why do you do everything so perfect. You just put everything I do to shame as you mids are so meticulous! You can save more weight on wheels that's why I when with the OEM Rays. My seats are 6kgs against your 7.5kg. I shaved bits here and there: Full plenum swap for kinetix, fluidampr crank pulley, headers and ART pipes, lighter exhaust, BBK slightly lighter than OEM setup, aluminium SPL arms and bushes By the time I do the glass swap for lexan, wire strip and full roll cage I'd be hopefully 1400-1450kg wet weight minus driver. Long live track cars!
djtimo
Lol.. Thanks bonnet! I'm hampered by the weight of the tt kit and large down pipes etc. If I go mad and drop off the door cards, internal door plate, window motors and runners that's 7,5-8kg per door! Even keeping glass! My plan to get down to 1400kg is... - light race battery saves = 9kg - drill our rear crash brace = 2kg - carbon rear hatch/lexan = 15-20kg - swap out oem W brace for alu upgrade =??? - passenger seat = 7,5kg - door gutting = 15-16kg Total = 45kg approx This gets me a chunck closer to 1400kg but after that I doubt I'll be able to lose more I need a fire extinguisher which adds weight so then it's just (Clarkson voice) POWER..... djtimo
Bennett do you know what the Kenetix manifold has saved weight wise?? If I swapped the oem strut brace out for carbon I could save a kg or so there plus I need to cut down my wireloom in the car so that may save another 1kg. Potentially up to 47kg to lose. GT4 Zed
Unfortunately I did not weigh all the stuff I've taken out or swapped but I'm positive the kinetix is lighter. You loose the weight of both OEM upper and lower cast aluminium manifolds and fittings. There should be at least 1-2kg in it from muscle memory. hmm CF strut brace. There are too pricey for the weight saving IMHO. Stripping the door of the motors, crash bar and redundant wiring will save more weight and be cheaper. djtimo
More work on the zed today. Fitted my toe bolts about ten mins after the post man dropped them off lol.. Plus my drift works traction arms I've had for a few weeks now. Template in place for the subframe to be enlarged. Subframe cut. This was an easy job tbf... just a pain to get tools in the right angle to make the cuts. Not really got any more pics as my hands were dirty by now and I was working alone again lol. Traction arms fitted. (these were a PITA as you really need two people to help man handle the rear wheel out the way to get the arms off and new ones back in) Large rose joint in place on subframe end. Arms fitted and toe adjust by eye ready for going on the jig again tomorrow Anyway even after adjusting the arms and bolts by eye the car feels SOOOO much better than before. I can see the rear is running far less toe in and less camber so ill have it set up again tomorrow and she should be driving wicked now! PS. i know the car looks a state lol.. Im sorting the underside slowly. Edited January 27, 2016 by djtimo
evilscorp
^^or just remove the wheel before fitting the arms =) lol. Nice job, I know what you mean about being fiddly trying to grind away the subframe.
djtimo
When I mean move rear wheel out the way a really mean pull the hub and knuckle assembly about to get the arms in and out wheel off doesn't really help unfortunately
djtimo
Car getting toe sorted again this morning.. Toe was set to 1mm in on both sides vs. the 10mm per side it was running and camber set to -1 degree to max rear tire contact patch Car feels miles and miles better on the short drive i took it on to scrum tires in see what it felt like! Now just need to see what its like on track on go from there!

Plus its with supercardriver.com and loads of ferrari's and lambo's booked on as well as a mate in his V10 supercharged R8 so will be great to see how the little zed does against the big boys.
djtimo
More work on weight loss today The door windows have not worked for over a year so Ive decided to gut the motors and rail system in them to save a few Kg's Window was removed, All parts of the power system removed and them 1mm Alu plate was used to brace the window back into the correct position. Few pics with the door gutted Its not staying like this yet so the door card has gone back on but i may make a carbon sheet door skin soon Job done! Door card back on! Window in correct place! Motor and rails Weight Inner door skin. Weight Foam from inside the door card, nuts and bolts plus the bose tweeter. Drivers door done today only but same will be done to passenger door ASAP. Weight saved today 4.3KG x 2 for both doors = 8.6KG TOTAL WEIGHT LOST SO FAR = 34.07KG Edited February 11, 2016 by djtimo
GT4 Zed
Good job again budðŸ‘. I just to out the door card on mine and left everything else as when I disconnected the electrics with the window up it doesn't seal well and let's in wind noise. Alternatively when it's all the way up it seems to catch on the a pillar trim at the top but get a perfect seal. How did you go about it? I'm still looking for a craftsquare mirror but they are like looking for a unicorn. I think I'll end up using a universal race mirror and custom make my own base. I really like how you arrive to your solutions. I'll send you the weight/size of the parts you want and also a shipping quote on Saturday. djtimo
More work done today. I have finally changed out the "takata" harness for a matching schroth racing PRO EF 2 ASM on the passenger side Not a lot but every bit counts haha Takata weight. 1.65KG Schroth weight. 1.55KG Harness's fitted I can weight to get matching passenger seat! lol.. Makes the OEM eats look so FAT! I have made a start on the passenger door weight removal as well, I thought i should weigh the door card this time round as i'll end up ditching these soon for carbon paneling. Potential weight loss from doorcards is another 7.45KG! (total doors weight loss would then be 16.05KG) Door card. Weight Door handle, elbow pad and bolts etc. Small boot trim from around rear high level light. Picked up a new racing battery made by odyssey Its a called extreme 22 or PC625 and comes in at a very light 6KG! Its tiny as well haha. The other benefit of these over my old full size Bosch unit is this one is sealed and won't leak. Normal car batteries can leak and give off acid vapour. New vs. Old for size! 8.3KG LIGHTER! Specs. These batteries are susceptible to vibration damage so I was recommended to fit a foam base. This was just cut from garage floor foam Nice and cheap. Anti-vibration foam fitted. Tiny new battery in place. (I need foam to cut to the space at the back just to be extra shore it won't move. Old battery on the scale. 14.3KG (Bosch website quotes 16.4KG for this model??) I have a little more weight to come out on the battery as its now using M6 posts vs. standard battery terminals so I can now use small light weight spade connectors and get rid of the heavy originals i have used. They must weight another 100-200g's TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS SO FAR = 42.62KG CAR DRY WEIGHT = 1437.25KG Edited February 25, 2016 by djtimo

djtimo
More work today Rear bumper off and drill out rear brace was today job. Rear bumper off... Took a while as I had top pop clips I needed to remove that would have been easy but the cf diffuser covers the underside of the car so i could not reach them! Took in total an hour to get to this point. Bumper off and rear brace removed. Started the mammoth task with the hole saw lol... 3 hours later and i had this! Just looking at weight loss mid way though the job. Original brace weight... 5.45kg 4.8KG so far... Rear foam off brace. 0.51KG The rear brace is far thicker than the front end one.. the outset skin is about 3mm thick, top and bottom skins 2mm and back skin is very thick.. 4-5mm i think. I have the back side left to drill out so more weight to come off this plus ill cut a few more smaller holes where i can. Total weight removed today = 1.16KG TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS SO FAR = 43.81KG
Mj86
Nice... Got a question for you... How would you rate Schroth Racing PRO EF 2 ASM compare to Takata harness??
350 Russ
have you thought about switching back to 18" rays? surely they would be stronger and lighter than the rotas you have on there now?
djtimo
Nice... Got a question for you... How would you rate Schroth Racing PRO EF 2 ASM compare to Takata harness?? Im not in the best position so answer that as my takata harnesses were not genuine items... sold on ebay as gen but turned out to be fake. I swapped to schroth as the buckle and ASM system is very good.
djtimo
have you thought about switching back to 18" rays? surely they would be stronger and lighter than the rotas you have on there now? yes! Only thing is i have sold my OEM rays years ago and then are not wide enough to fir the rubber i need.
GT4 Zed
Tim, I was in the same position with wheels a year ago. My lovely 19' but heavier than Ray's or getting very expensive set of lightweight forged 18" or 19"s? I really wanted the Volks CE28N but to much when I got other priorities so I went back with OEM Rays. I got 2 set of rears which are 18x8.5J and I have Toyo R888 245/40/18 and 275/40/18 setup. It just about ok and works really well but the weight saving and response is remarkable! The car is so lively now and brakes better.. I needed 20/25mm spacers to get it looking perfect and to clear my BBK. Tyres are also cheaper. I have no regrets and will keep this setup until I can get Volks/Ray's of similar weight or lighter and a tad wider. 18x 8.5 and 9.5" should be perfect. djtimo
Finished the rear brace off today Sick of drilling this thing now lol.. I could have taken another 200-300g out but this was far enough for now. Brace now weights bang on 4kg. (excuse the really shitty garage lol) Re-fitted after I have cleaned the rear bulk head off with silicone spray Weight loss from brace work = 2.01KG TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS = 44.63KG CAR DRY WEIGHT = 1435.24KG Edited February 25, 2016 by djtimo
