Ceejay's JDM and Bay - Let the fun begin?

So I have finally sourced a garage to store the beast. As you can see it is rather tight, but the main thing is that it is both solid and dry. So for the time being it will do.

Engine cover off, let surgery commence;

I wouldn't advise removing the plenum when the engine is warm. I had a two minute drive in order to get to the garage so it wasn't overly hot. Still warm enough though!

 

I noticed that one of the bolts had minor signs of corrosion, anything to worry about? All of the other bolts were as new.

Plenum off and H-Dev spacer exposed. Will I require a new gasket to fit before reinstalling the plenum?

Had a bit of time to kill (waiting for collection) so decided to see what else I could remove and tart up whilst the plenum and throttle body are off being polished. Came up with these;

Time to wrap everything up and send off to Mark. I will also be including this, fingers crossed he can restore it;

Penultimate coats of lacquer applied to these little pieces. Look much better and should add a little more depth to the bay.

Received a package from Mark earlier this week of which included a polished plenum and throttle body. It is amazing how both have been completely transformed within a short period of time. Excellent service, would use again and highly recommend.

 

This gave me the opportunity to fit Paddy's bolt kit and other Pro-Bolt goodies of which I bought a while back and a few other colour coded items;

So I began with the plenum and throttle body and found it rather therapeutic, it's nice to use practical skills after employing theoretical all week in the office. First hiccup was the air intake; I had a feeling that it slotted inside the throttle body and began scratching my head until I realised that this wasn't possible due to the fixing location halfway down the tube.

So pressed on, slid the rubber seal over the void and fixed in place using jubilee clips.

 

I also had a few issues with the new bonnet catch. First of all I slotted it in front of the central fixing and couldn't for the life of me figure out why it sat so high and consequently fouled. I then tried sliding it behind which worked although didn't appear to sit as well until fully tightened. Needless to say I also had to adjust the position on the Y-axis until I was happy with the shut line. Got there in the end but nearly threw the six plastic clips that fix the cooling panel down out the door. Has anybody replaced these with bolts?

 

After what seemed to be a short period of time (most definitely a few hours) I completed what I set out to do and here is the result;

I am amazed at how well the anodised washers match the other red elements, yes it's all anodised red but there are so many different shades of red. Slightly disappointed that the engine cover hides quite a few bolts, but after considering what else is lurking beneath the cover it's a no brainer to keep it on.

 

Had to fit a new battery too as the current one had a dead cell which has been causing issues for as long as I can remember; I have been driving everywhere with the trusted boost pack!

 

So I turn the engine over to hear a lovely burble and without warning lights. I must admit I was slightly concerned as I had read that the throttle body, in particular the butterfly valve, is rather temperamental. However all was well, at least I thought that until I took a look under the hood to see coolant pi55ing out. Whooops my bad forgot to connect a hose!! It had to be the most awkward one didn't it!

Eventually I took the car out for a much needed blast. Thoroughly enjoyed it as I have been driving a hanging focus for the last three weeks or so. Ten miles down the road I park the car and can hear what I can only be described as a chemical experimentation erupting under the bonnet! So I dash out to see coolant everywhere. Has to be that awkward hose I thought; no it isn't?? After a frantic call to the old man I decided to leave it a while and top up the coolant with water, enabling me to nurse it home.....it took me over an hour with frequent stop offs and water refills to retrace the ten miles back to the garage. Felt like a teenager again; sitting in lay-bys with the windows all steamed up and people passing.

 

I managed to safely make it back but have no idea as to why it is overheating/loosing coolant? The temperature seems to be ok with low levels of coolant however at maximum the coolant pressurises and an explosion looks imminent!

 

Any ideas in what it could be? All hoses are fixed in place, the rad is coming on and I believe I have correctly fixed the plenum in place.

 

Meanwhile the car is cooling off and resting in the garage. Bittersweet.

Looks awesome dude, glad you stuck with only a couple of colours in the bay, looks properly classy!

 

I think the only thing I'd consider would be painting the "Nissan" on the engine cover burger.

 

Bumper looks cool too, glad to see someone else getting rid of their plate and washer jets ;)

Thanks RJF, I think I will go for gunmetal grey hoses and braided sleeves where possible to tone down the red slightly. Concerned that it could become a bit OTT. Yes much prefer clean smooth lines although I have a JDM model therefore the washer nozzles were never present. I have however smoothed many other elements.

There is a fine line with getting the colour balance right and going OTT.

 

When you do see the line, can you take a pic or remind me what it looks like as I crossed it and left it behind ages ago! :lol:

 

You need some carbon bonnet dampers too Ceejay :thumbs:;)

Haha!! Yes I do need some carbon bonnet dampers! Not only do they look the nuts, it means I can get rid of that pesky stay that constantly gets in the freaking way!

 

Am I right in thinking you offer specific coloured stickers? Or did I dream that one up?

Decided to carry out a little more to the bay this weekend which included the addition of colour coded nuts/washers for the engine cover courtesy of Pro-Bolt, braided hose-sleeves with anodised finishers, hose clamps and carbon bonnet lifters thanks to 14N. Minor additions that help to reinforce the colour scheme.

I started by measuring the circumference all of desired hoses and then calculating the diameters of each based on those figures. Each braided sleeve came in 1m lengths which enabled me to cover a few OEM hoses. Pretty simple really; measure them up, cut through using a junior hacksaw and tidied up afterwards using insulation tape and hose finishers.

Cocked up refitting this one. It was left off the car for a while as I didnt have a large enough finishers, after receiving the correct jubilee clip I decided to fit it around the wrong way! This became apparent after trying to press the brake pedal :scare:. Quick phone call to the old man and I discovered that it has a one way valve :lol:.

I also noticed that the engine cover was warping and after close inspection I decided that something was stuck beneath it. Turned out to be the new bolt kit siting proud, therefore I removed the four that were concealed by the engine cover and re-installed the Horsham bolts as they sat lower allowing me to relocate the extra four around the engine bay. Win win.

Hose clips fitted to regiment its position, bonnet stay removed as it is now surplus to requirements and fixing covered using a left over bolt and washer;

Managed to fit the bonnet lifters with ease thanks to CS2000's fool proof write up and 14N's tips. It was a bit of a squeeze refitting the red battery/brake fluid surrounds, but managed it. Nice addition, found myself repeatedly opening and closing the bonnet and watching it slowly lift......witchcraft :)

Go for it Chris, it's great fun and pretty rewarding. Am I right in thinking in thinking your zed is charged?

 

14N I think I will go for grey conduit but need to establish what dims I require and what's covering what as fiddling with electronics can cause all sorts of issues!!
