Just curious to see what cars people think i could get for £3000 and under. Age is of no great concern.. Turbo or charged aren't bad thoughts for cheapness. I've scanned and it seems estates and hatchbacks seem to be the base. Like i said i'm only toying with the idea at present. Personally though if I were getting rid of a sports car to save money, I'd spend £3k on a focus and see where finances were in 6 months and re-assess. If i do change from the Zed it would be beneficial to have more seats I guess, I say turbo or charged as then there is the possibilty of easier modification for the future. I am considering a bugeye at present, as the running costs don't 'seem' to be too different from the Zed's. My main reason would be that selling the Zed for I'm assuming 7k is the going rate these days? Would free up some money whilst I'm part-time working and at college. The only thing about well known cars like the Impreza is "are they going to be a considerable amount more on insurance due to the nature of history?" . Most will know what I mean there. Of course I could strip the Zed of the exhaust, wheels and coilovers too for possibly better money as I've kept the original parts in the shed. 6k then, say I would spend 3k on the car and 1k max on insurance (worst case scenario) would still leave me with the money to hold me by until I can get more income. More seats would be beneficial for a start, 4wd would also be helpful as I live down a pretty crappy road which is downright abismal to exit with even the smallest of snowflakes. Also another key factor would be that If i would keep the car then as a turbo the performance modifactions to be made would be less of a cost and a smarter way to go than pour loads of money into a Zed. At £3K they're going to be a bit sheddy though, and you may quickly eat into your budget just keeping them on the road. A good E36 328i would be a great shout, but at the expense of 4WD. taras Posted February 10, 2013 Share Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) well a bug eye isnt bad and believe it or not its not that much differnt on insurance compared to the zed. Though it is more practical it is still fun to drive. I have a Celica GT4 and being a coupe its not totally impractical but it is an old car and a money is an issue with repairs especially with its super struts. Like for like in money after sales, I agree with Ekona. A RWD 3 series maybe a 330i would be practical and still enjoyable. Otherwise go for the bug eye but be warned. Boost is addictive and once you're used to constantly driving in max boost you will end up wanting more. Its good fun to drive, great in winter and a happy compromise when not being able to drive the zed. It does cost me a lot more than the zed on insurance but that was because I had all three cars with the same company for convenience. I have managed to knock it down now. Well worth considering. A few friends have had/ still have the Cupra R and I've heard mixed reviews, although nothing is quite the same as making up your own mind so I'll add that also thanks! Martin, in terms of a percentage say, how much more has the Impreza cost you than the Zed insurance wise? If you are available to say ofc. There are specialists used by scooby owners but its a risk assessment so not easy. The company I have changed to for the other cars are really cheap for the zed but dont insure scoobys. Think I'll delve into this a bit further to see 'why' it's cheaper before I go about committing to anything (be a while yet as I haven't decided either).
