But I still maintain that bays are too narrow in the UK and that where I live now (and the States and other countries I've been to) they have "proper" parking spaces. i.e. a car can be parked and four people can get out and open their doors wide without even thinking about the car in the bay next to you. I don't disagree that the bays are tight, but with a bit of courtesy you can get in and out of them fine. coupes and other 3 door cars find it harder as the door is longer and this makes getting out harder. Perhaps that's where i've been going wrong. i've had 3 door cars pretty exclusively since about 1982 (first one a 1975 Escort Mark 1 in yellow) and didn't realise the doors were longer. I used to be paranoid about leaving my cars in public car parks but eventually realised it isn't worth the stress (it took me about 15 years though!). Basically the world if full of ming mongs who wouldn't care if they damaged your car, accidentally or on purpose. I've been lucky (touch wood) with the Zed but I view repairing bodywork scuffs as a yearly maintenance cost. Double parking is a bit ming mong too in my view and I agree with SMD that it'll probably draw unwanted attention anyway RTBiscuit, that site brightened up my day It looks like it might have been done by the cycling mong who posted vids of bad driving a while back.... If he can do it, then anyone can and there is zero excuse for it. The height of the thing is a different story, and renders every multistory car park unusable! rtbiscuit Posted October 2, 2012 Share Posted October 2, 2012 my car comes with a built in trim to protect against doors, it runns the length of the side. and guess where all the dents are... they are above this and on thw wings, and its pretty obvious its caused by kids flinging the door open at the back of a 4X4 or people carrier. where the door curves over their rear wheel at the back, its that higher bit that hits my lower car. i've always been known for my generosity, so if i've seen where someone has given me a ding, i like to return the favour sad thing is i fling a door alot better than a 7 year old my personal favourite was catching a guy doing it while i was sat in the car. flung his door open and dinged my door. i got out and asked him for £100 to pat for the dent to be pulled. he told me to sod off, and its only a sodding car and i should get over it. so i put the sole of my foot into his door. you should have seen his face. " what the sodding hell have you done etc etc etc, i can;t believe you sodding done that etc etc etc, are you sodding going to pay for that etc etc etc." my leaving comment " get over it, its only a sodding car" and drove off. i have to say i spent about 2 weeks expecting the cops to turn up and arrest me for criminal damage. and i'm still suprised they never did. but i think the guy learnt that in future to open his car door more carefully. here endeth the lesson Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Its not how close the parent and child spaces are to the shop/entrance etc that matters - we have rain covers for prams, and baby seats. We have umbrellas, and we have use of our legs. The problem is the width, because to get a baby seat into the back of a car, you need to open the door wide enough to pass the relatively bulky baby seat through the door opening. If you cant get the baby seat in, then you are stuck. Tracy once had no choice but to leave Lewis in his baby seat in the boot, reverse the car out, then put him into the rear isofix base. All because some knob had decided to park on a hatched area next to her and prevented her from opening the doors wide enough to get his baby seat in. If there are no parent and child spaces left, we just park far away, in the hope that there will be enough room when we get back. If there are two of us with Lewis, then its not su much of a problem as one can move the car while the other hangs onto him, if we are on our own, we are a bit stuffed. I have had blazing rows with knobs who park in parent and child spaces that arent using them for their propper purpose, and I swear if it continues at our local shops, Ill get a winch fitted and simply drag their car out. So the Zed is always at the furthest end of the car park (good for burning of the doughnut calories I consume at work) next to a wall or pillar, and if all else fails next to the most expensive car possible. Bad or selfish parking infuriates me, so I'm sure it does the same to other people. In a multistory or supermarket car park I'll park somewhere further away from the entrance, I don't mind the extra walk and there's less chance of getting a door ding. Like most here, I've parked my Zed all alone in a space to come back finding cars parked either side, even though there's lots of spaces left. I think that's just those car users making the same judgement as us "Mmm looks a smart motor, they're probably quite careful, if I park it next to that car they're not likely to ding my door......". I really do think this is true, much as If I park next to a 911, F355 or Bentley, I'd assume they'd be careful owners and not ding my car. We live right in the centre of Bath and parking is notoriously difficult here, you're always at risk of getting a knock or ding, I try not to worry about it now. Most people on our 'road', which strictly speaking is just a big roundabout, are pretty good at parking and try their best to leave room, gaps, space etc. Its mostly the tourists and stuff who can't park or who moan about it where we are, but then the road is curved, so I guess that does notch up the difficulty level a bit. Still, I tend to manage to park by using the skill of eyes and these amazing things attached to my car called 'mirrors', it would seem not everyone has had training on them Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A few weeks ago I parked my zed right over the back of the Tesco car park all on its own with no other cars within 20m. I come back to find that there are still no cars within 20m except the boxster in the space to my left and the clio 182 in the space to my right I have no problem with that though, as they were both parked properly and the condition of the cars suggested they were as anal as I am DB Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

This summer I was at the Chatsworth Farm Shop on a busy Sunday afternoon. Parking spaces were few and I chose one with a garden on one side and an almost new Aston Martin on the other. I wasn't 30 feet away when the big fat owner owner retunrned to the Aston and swung his door right into my car. He probably got the Aston a lot easier than I got my car.
