Breath-taking dishonesty

I really fancy an integrale one day. The only direct competition for the GTiR really in terms of rally-bred hatches.

But I'd sell my soul for a Renaultsport Clio v6. They are quite expensive nowadays, but they are the ultimate hatch, there is nothing that even gets close to the craziness of a short wheelbase, mid engine, rear wheel drive 3 LITRE clio. I've never driven one, but owning one is on my bucket list.

I love the pulsar GTiR because it's a slice of automotive Japanese history that will never happen again.

Yep. Looks mental, drives mental and goes like stink, Ive been out in a few 400hp ones and they rather take ones breath away

Seeing as I love pointing out where Aashenfox has missed the boat a bit, rally derived hatches also include the 160/185/205 GT4's, Audi Quattro, Glanza/Starlet, Mazda 323 GTX and GT-R, Golf Rallye, Escort Cosworth, even a Lotus Sunbeam at a push - if you can find them the T16's, RS1600 and 1700's, 306 Maxis and R5 Gordinis will make a bit of money in the next few years as well Id have thought.

But the winner for me is always the 'grale, they are just a masterpiece to drive, so much character and just all round lovely but the prices have gone from "steep" to "comedy" in the last few years :(

It;s all education, and it's all good, however, I didn't miss the boat on this one... :)

I was well aware of (most of) those cars, I even owned an original quattro back in the day (er, back in the day being the late 90s, it was a piece of crap if I'm honest, it had been horribly abused and its head gasket went after I'd had it for 6 months, so not really all that representative), so here's my retort...

Peugeot? Not on your nelly.

Audi quattro, hardly on par with small hatchbacks

Glanza/Starlet, come on, might as well have thrown a fiat Uno turbo in, these are cardboard boxes with wheels.

Fords...ok, I'll give you that, they got a few.

Golf Rallye - one of my favorite cars of all time, but mentioned in the same breath as GTIR and Integrale? Meh...

Where the 6R4? lol

I'm with you on the Integrale, I'd prefer one to a GTIR, but hten I'd prefer the bat sh1t crazy 3.0 clio to any of them. :) If I remember my old Top Gear episodes correctly, a number of F1 drivers had the Clio in their perfect 10 car garages.

Are there any 205s still with their original panels? I've driven a 205 1.9 plenty, again back in the day, of course, back then it felt like a rocket, but I don't put it anywhere near the 'grale and GTiR, they are an a higher level (my opinion, ya know, others might disagree). Trouble is they all fell apart, like most French cars ultimately do.

Stratos, mmmm, but I can't get past the ridiculous looks. Great rally car, idiotic road car. :) And we are talking about using these homologised cars on the road after all, which is what prompted my original statement that there really isn't any competition (as road cars) to the 'grale and the GTiR. :)

Stratos ......... :cloud9:

Not really a hatchback through is it?

And Im not really sure what the other reply is about, all of the cars listed are relatively small 4x4's with some element of success rallying, there are more choices out there than just the growler and the GTi-R. Expand it to "youre allowed a boot" and the Evo particuarly shows up the age of the GTi-R :)

The 6R4 is in the same place as the RS200 (and Lancia 037 and S4 if you fancy), I just dont classify them as road cars at the end of the day :)

Well you could say the same of the Integrale, many are rusting away falling apart, Lancia were hardly known for solidity back in the day. GTiR from what I understand is a lightweight car with a lump in it from an S13, so would expect it to be quick as the chassis weighs very little (and by all accounts is also prone to falling apart) I remember looking at these briefly before getting the R33 and apart from Ricey telling me I would be a chav for getting one, the forums mentioned the awfully unreliable transmission so I moved away from the idea. I struggle a little to believe a GTiR is the be all and end all of 90s rally cars, or even the Integrale which got comprehensively outdone by Toyota/Subaru/Mitsubishi most years.

All that said, the Integrale is a rather special car. I think it was Perfomance Classics or some magazine of that name I read an article comparing the Integrale/Cosworth/GT4 and Integrale won on what the reviewer prefered but it was not night and day like you might think.

S14 actually, 400hp is only a GT2871R and a fuel pump away .......

Exactly why I never bought one

Now that is interesting - I had an Integrale back in the day (and an HF Turbot) and still feel my heart quicken a bit when they are mentioned but was distinctly underwhelmed by my mates ST185 GT four Sainz when I had a go, I preferred by 200SX by quite a long way. ever tried and EsCos but dont think Ive ever heard anyone say anything bad about the drive, one day ..........

Whores for courses I guess but if you ever get a chance to drive an Integrale of any kind rip their arm off, I used to get out of the car sweating from concentrating so hard on piloting it

They tested an ST205 in the above mentioned test, so a bit unfair in terms of real era (Integrale came along first) - it was a bit of a funny read as I know the guy they borrowed the GT4 from for the test and the reporters testing it said it was a tremendous drive after climbing out stating the grip really was something else, then in the article didn't mention that at all and raved about the Integrale. I guess you cannot always believe what you read in the press  there will always be an angle to the article they want to achieve. Doesn't sound so good saying a boring Toyota wins ;)

I nearly bought one just before I bought my zed, prices then were about 8k for a phase 1 and 10->12k for a phase 2. Like you say, the prices have rocketed since then. I read a lot of reviews on them and watched loads of videos at the time. They are really all about the madness of being a rear engined clio, rather than actual performance and handling. I remember when they first came out and everyone was shocked that they were slower than a Renault 5 GTT which could have spaceship performance for little cash. But the mental pumped up aggressive steroid looks of the clio v6 is what really attracted me to them.

Dude, Im the chairman of the owners club, Ive got a fair idea about this ;)

If you want to get to that level of pendantry, and S13 is actually a booted Silvia that only came with a CA18DET. The SR20DET was found in the PS13 (booted Silvia, JDM only) and the RPS13 (sold here as the S13 200SX). The only UKDM car the SR20DET was only fitted to the S14 (and the Sunny GTi-R, obviously) :)

As an obvious Silvia fan, what do you think of the boss rocket bunny kit? I am so seriously considering picking up a banged up s14 and going for it. I think it looks spectacular, what do the Silvia crowd think of it?

Split right down the middle, some think its awesome, some thing its a bit of a waste of a decent S14 - if you want a Charger then go buy a Charger.

RB stuff is not cheap either, Id much rather get a nice clean Zenki and just drop it to the floor on sweet rims, thats all an S14 needs really IMO :)

This Focus ST170 I have is an absolute heap. It's been through 6 CV joints in 8 months. My mechanic friends and I can't fathom why.

I got rid of mine to buy the Z, for a Ford, way too expensive on parts. Mine cost me £950 for a clutch and fly, £480 for a F'ing alternator ! The steering rack was on its way out and the driveshafts were ready for changing, add in the fact it hated starting when hot.

Was looking at another £800-900 to put it right

Trade in time.... Bye ! Got a £1000 off the Z for it :)

Hope it wasn't mine you got....

@Coldel

One of these ?

A charger is fat beast, wouldn't handle ANYTHING like the S14. I absolutely love the Boss kit, despite being quite a big hater of muscle cars. I have my own ideas for finishing touches that would take away some of its 'chargerness', and make a it a bit more JDM.

Would have to be the GT not the ST, slightly wider tyres, and you got yourself a rather nice looking car

While i love the intergrale and the mazda 323f GTR, i think the 323 is more rare than the pulsar and the intergrale is out of my price range unfortunately.

So, i think Coldel might be right, my next best option may be to go back the GT-four.

We will see.
