They are now pretty certain it is my diff. So I have a couple of questions for you knowledgeable folk: Is the diff on 350z's the same on all models? Mine is a JDM fairlady one for reference. evilscorp Posted September 29, 2015 Share Posted September 29, 2015 No, JDM car's mostly came with a open diff but some came with the viscous diff (same as uk) but also not all of them have the cooling fins, so unless your mechanics know what they are doing (sounds like they don't) take it to someone that does and save time and money. Ok my problem started as a strange noise when braking, like it was catching but it was rather loud. Initially I thought it was a warped disc, so I replaced that... it didn't fix it. I took it to a garage where I know the staff and they used a laser thing (can't remember what it's called) and it showed movement in the hub so we/they assumed a bent/warped hub. I bought one off ebay and waited for it to arrive. In the mean time I started getting another noise not when braking from the opposite side. This confused me again! So today they fitted a new (2nd hand) hub to it, only for the issue to still be there except it has moved sides so now on passenger side. After a bit more investigating the found the culprit was the diff. Apparently there should be some movement at either side of something (sorry not sure what) and it was only happening on one side. They spoke to some diff specialists about it and apparently its not worth getting it fixed, better to just buy a used (or new if feeling flush) one and fit that. Which brings me to here and my questions So is there anyway of searching via my reg or anything to determine what sort of diff I have by any chance? Thanks again for your knowledge fellow zedders! P.S my zed seems quite basic specced from what I've read - cloth seats, no nav, not bose, standard wheels so perhaps it is just an open diff? ZMANALEX Posted September 29, 2015 Share Posted September 29, 2015 It will either be an open diff or a VLSD. It will not be a LSD unless previous owner fitted one. evilscorp Posted September 29, 2015 Share Posted September 29, 2015 They said it was a warped hub very very much doubt that unless it was in an accident. More likely the camber and caster bolts are shot and out of alignment which they can't budge hence the laser alignment is out. If you need parts Zmanalex is the way to go but get a second opinion. Ask your "mechanic" what differential is in it. Otherwise you could stick the car up on axle stands (just the rear and only if confident you know how to) turn one wheel and see if the other moves in the same direction. Really need details to diagnose problems, was it your stub/drive shafts that only had movement in one side? 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
docwra Posted September 30, 2015 Share Posted September 30, 2015 If the garage you are using dont know how to tell whether its an LSD or not, and originally diagnosed it as a warped hub then Id get the keys back off them, get in the car and GTFO as quickly as possible. As an added bonus, turn the traction control off and do a massive burnout off the forecourt as you leave - if you get a single skidmark its an open diff, if you get two then its LSD 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I seem to think even a LSD JDM diff doesn't have fins will need to do some hunting for info. Also doesn't have a jacking post. All UK cats had a viscous LSD diff casing is heavily finned with a jacking post. Some UK cars have plastic cooling duct that bolts on the rear diff some don't.
