  1. 15psi at warm idle is the cut off point, above that you can get this done as and when, below that point you need to push it to the top of the list. the cost is all in the man hours. the part doesn't cost that much, but you have to take the engine out and then open it's guts up. there is a guide on this site for the competent mechanics among us (ie not me) this is where the expert zed mechanics can come in with a very competitive quote, it can take them less time to crack the engine open than a mechanic who's not worked on many zeds i was at 30psi warm idle when my zed was 100K old, i'm now at the cuttoff point at 150K. i'm aiming to get it done by the end of the year.
  2. She does have a lovely burble Check out this buyers guide (scroll down for a 2nd guide a few posts below the first too!) You might want to avoid Junction 17 as a potential dealer, this thread has a compelling amount of advice against them: The 350Z is a tough car, mine has 150K on the clock and has only lost a few ponies from the factory. I have poured a ton of money into her though, she's long in the tooth and things need replacing. As with most cars as long as it's been serviced and kept topped up with oil the engine should be fine. If you're buying private ask about petrol too, super unleaded matches the requirements in the manual. Well worth investing in good tyres, while you can go budget and drive sensibly on them it's no fun when a run of the mill ford focus can out accelerate you in the wet (yes, the tyres mine came with really were that bad). If this is your first car at a similar BHP then do a year on regular insurance then next year check out some of the insurance companies that do deals on here, they should be able to drop your premium and be very mod friendly. I went from 130bhp to 308 in one step, got a good quote from the comparison sites for the first year, with no mods allowed. Now I'm using some of the specialist and can mod away. You will probably want to read up on the differences between UK zeds and imports, there are some good bargains to be had on the imports if they work for you. I chose the zed over competing cars because of the big lazy V6, that surge of power no matter what gear you're in is very grin inducing. As long as you can deal with the tiny boot and lack of rear seats she's a wonderful car!
  3. The HR doesn't need so much on the intake side, they fixed the angled plenum and went twin air intake. My HR did have an annoying glitch when driving at very low revs (think stop start traffic) that would cause her to kick like mule for a split second when slowly accelerating. That's all gone with a remap from Horsham Developments (did well over 45K miles as a daily driver like that so it's not impossible to live with, just a real pain in the arse). Tyres should be high on the list, when they get low on tread or are poor rubber it's really hard to put power down in the wet. Get a bad enough set of rubbers and a regular ford focus can out accelerate you when its raining! For exhaust check the fittings are in high grade stainless steel too, some of the cheaper options will use a lower grade on the fittings so while the pipes wont rust the fittings might. I know the Invidia Gemini has good fittings, roars when you put your foot down but is nice and calm when cruising. Depends what you're after though noise wise. I raised mine back to stock height and even now she will still ground out at some petrol stations. Much better though at stock. But given she's my daily I have replaced the fibreglass front bumper with a plastic one. I'm guessing you're already on plastic and adding a lip will give it plenty of flexibility for the inevitable scrape. There are some zeds on here with air kits so I'm sure you'll get good advice on that (or will be able to search for it). She's a wonderful car and you'll be grinning from ear to ear all the way home tomorrow
  4. my last car had a rev limit at 7K, so i didn't fancy going down the rev range which put me off the DE. so naturally I was drawn to the HR for an increase in rev limit. i also like the bonnet bulge that said if you're into modding then a DE or rev-up might be smarter as parts are cheaper and more plentiful, with the exception of DRLs, the sexyiest ones I found were for facelift only, and I've just put a DE bumper on my zed locking me out of those shinies until torqen can get them rebuilt for the DE! any of the 3 variants will put a massive smile on your face. i got a high mileage HR and have put a lot of money into her mechanically. but i was wooed with an HR that popped up below the budget I was saving for and right within reach of where my savings had got to, and the V1 nismo body kit together with the thought of getting a zed early won me over. i don't regret or begrudge any of the money i have pumped into her as 2 years on she still makes me grin from ear to ear
  5. how can you be angry with such a beautiful car taking up so much of the photo?
  6. thanks for the answers all as a daily i do need to be able to drive her gently (don't like throwing my passengers about) so any mod i do to make her more fun to drive also has to be balanced with still being able to chauffeur people about this post is very interesting as it's not a mod i thought would suit my needs, but the thought of her feeling more agile while still being smooth to drive is most tempting
  7. most interesting as mine is a daily and i put a lot of miles on her. do you need higher revs to pull away? is it easy to go from stop to crawling in stop start traffic? is she more prone to stalling? edit: oh, one more thing, is it easy to pull away smoothly, driving miss daisy style?
  8. there are 3 different red lines depending on which version you have, so of course she will redline at different speeds in 3rd! eg my HR red lines at 70mph in 2nd, though that's to be taken with the pinch of salt that is indicated speed vs actual speed
  9. is the secret to get the HR engine? same goes for the cup holders too
  10. Thanks my baby is current with sly to get that engine light fixed then it will be on to rejuvenating her even more as the pay cheques come in will be really nice when i can start work on the cosmetics as that bumper is a horrible eye sore i have spent a lot on her, but the gf is supportive so as long as i can afford it there is no reason not to
  11. Just for any that are curious, I walked out of one job right into another, with a nice pay rise to boot, so the zed is staying
  12. the manual says to park the car in gear, that's how bad the handbrake is. i live on quite a steep hill and the engine is quite capable of doing the lions share of the work when it comes to not letting it roll! also before i got some proper rubber on her i had to do a hill start on a crazy steep cobbled road. i gave it plenty of juice and the traction control sorted out the rest. as for the penny trick, get some rubber grommets instead (eg from maplins). that will be safer on the body work if you're worried about doing damage there are 2 things that can go wrong with the boot: 1: it doesn't clear the catch when you press the button, which means you need one hand to lift and one hand to push the button to open up (or 1 fast hand to do both!). this is what the penny trick fixes 2: it tries to bite your head off. this is what fixing the struts helps with (re-gas or new ones) it sounds like you have problem number 2, so the penny trick won't help. the springs push the boot past the catch, the struts then lift the boot up and keep it up. the penny trick is for the springs only. if it's got past the catch then the penny trick wont help
  13. Does anyone know what effect fixing the engine light would have on its value? Same thing for the front bumper? Thanks again for the help
  14. Thanks for the replies. I've updated the first post with some pics showing the general look as well as highlighting the rougher parts.
  15. Hi all, life has thrown a curve ball at me so it looks like I'll have to find a shed to drive about in until I can get back on my feet. As much as my heart says keep the zed for as long as I can my brain is saying I should really liquidate and be smart with my cash. So, that leads me on to the question of what is my zed worth? It's a 2008 HR with 133K on the clock. Pro points are the Invidia exhaust, the Nismo V1 body kit, MPSS tires all round and having been serviced at Kaizers for the year I've owned it. Minus points are we're chasing down an engine light (though I have a quote for a fix, so that might be worth doing. P2A00 o2 sensor on bank 1 sensor 1) and a messed up bumper, came with a split in the bottom half and looks like someone with a tow bar reversed into it one night. I've focused my money on the mechanical side and have gone through a long list of parts that have been worn out. All fluids have been changed including the dif. She needs some TLC on the cosmetics but I wanted her running perfectly first. Thanks for your help and a fantastic forum full of info, I'll certainly be pointing any potential buyers here if I get to that point! Here are some pics as requested
  16. if you've just removed the oxidisation from the lights you will then need to re-seal the plastic to avoid them oxidising straight away. that way your clear headlights will stay nice and clear. have a browse about for some guides on the matter. if you plan to take her somewhere without a speed limit (track/autobahn) then i believe the jap cars are restricted to 112mph, so you might want to get that removed when you do a remap to get the benefit from any performance mods you do (mostly breathing mods for the DE) for jap vs uk take a look at this post: http://www.350z-uk.com/index.php?showtopic=1648 welcome and enjoy your new zed
  17. sounds like you need a new hobby that gets you in the seat more often
  18. isn't that the nismo v1 spoiler seen through a fish eye lens?
  19. MPSS all round, though i'm interested to see how the new pilot sports turn out, and what they have in store for next years replacement of the super sport
  20. well sometimes things just go wrong, so might be worth a phone call to get them to run a sanity check on it. i had a weird one years ago buying a new car. they took the old owner off but didn't put me on. i guess someone got half way through the form then got distracted and when they came back to it assumed they had done that form and moved on to the next. hey, we're all human.
  21. Cameras aren't much of a worry, I've managed to wrestle this beast under control Will look into crossing over the motorway again. I've done that route before to drop someone off in Crew, but not done the bulk of the bypass as I've had to go right in for the train station.
  22. Thinking of following the A50 until I hit the A34. That way I can skip the whole section of road works between j17 and j16. At rush hour that section of the m6 is a mess.
  23. Hehe, I was thinking of going that way to avoid the roadworks. See if I can get south of that whole mess before I join the motorway
  24. Well I'm based in kent so unless I see you on my way home today theb chances are slim No sign of the other HR today in the car park though
  25. I saw a black HR at barclay, had nismo wheels and left after I did so I bet that was your 6pm spotting Mine is the grubby HR with nismo body kit.
