  1. I've just attended a speed awareness course and the first half was delivered by a recently retired boss of the traffic police. He took great pains, in spite of his audience generally thinking differently, to assure us that the motorway speed limit for a car is 70 mph. One guy was feeling rather badly done to for getting pulled at 75 when "everybody" knows that you don't get pulled below 80! Discretion may be allowed, but the speed limit for a car on a motorway is still 70 mph.
  2. And I guess that the guy has a list of owners of 350Zs all for free so that he can blitz you with special offers.
  3. Assuming that you do get the average value, you could mix in the ratio of 2 parts (litres) of 95 to 1 part of 102 to get a final octane rating of 97.33
  4. Mixing equal amounts of 95 & 102 octane fuels would seem to give you a 98.5 octane mix. It seems logical but I don't know what I'm talking about here, so wait until someone with more knowledge comes along.
  5. I totally aggree that this is the correct priority. You can't do much without a house.
  6. See today's groupon offer here. http://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/sheffiel ... 0_235&a=12 Steve
  7. Look at your 3rd pic, Slimjim. In cross section you can see 2 half round cappings at 90 degrees to each other. These are obviously made to cover up the joints in something that do not quite touch each other. Does that help? I've been on many car assembly lines in my time but I've never seen the assemblers cut any trim mouldings to length before they fit them. Everything is so precise that any trim pieces would come in ready cut. It is, therefore, very unlikely to be an offcut from something. I'm sorry I can't help you further. Steve
  8. Disposal of industrial waste is a very expensive thing here in the UK and I guess it is too in Japan. Just think of the cost savings that could be made if it could all be hidden inside cars in areas where few people go to discover it! This could catch on. Steve
  9. Well said, Wasso, and my point exactly. I'm an engineer and have a need to be able to accurately measure things. When I read this thread and realised that there was a BHP figure that could be accurately measured and plotted (wheels) I failed to realise why anybody would have any interest in a predicted figure. I didn't know at that point that the manufacturers quote the flywheel figure in their advertising bumpf, etc. They are, of course, able to accurately measure the flywheel figure on bench testing rigs. I wonder if they remove the drive belt from the alternator, water pump, etc, to get the BHP figure even higher? My advice (and I don't give much) is to get your car dyno plotted before and after any changes to determine the difference (if any) made by the changes. They are the only meaningful figures that you have. Steve
  10. You're right you are missing something as I've also quoted the WHP figure I've not suggested that you have not quoted the WHP number. What I've questioned is the significance of the BHP figure at the flywheel 'cos I'm failing to see it. Its a genuine call for enlightenment. Steve
  11. Maybe I'm missing something here, but what is the interest in the power available at the flywheel? Surely its an academic figure, it must be what's available at the driving hubs that's interesting. Steve
  12. I've taken a look through my Zedfest pics and come up with this car, it may or may not be the one in question. Its a beautiful car anyway. Steve
  13. Just found this thread and I love it! My wife found this in a bag of Sainsbury's basics carrots and showed it to me. I nearly pi**ed myself with laughing at it. That was until she turned it around for me.
  14. Well this is the 317th posting on this subject and the overwhelming majority(100%?) seem to believe that the dregs who do the rioting/looting need to be punished very, very severly to teach them a bloody good lesson and make them think twice about repeating their behavior. So why does this not happen? Just how big a number are the softies and do-gooders? They must be a very clever bunch to be heard so loudly and taken notice of so much! I know that we are not a scientifically representave sample of the population (predominantly male and medium affluent to have such nice cars) but our opinions don't vary much from other people that I've discussed these things with. This is not, of course, the only area of society's rules that they are having an effect on. Just to throw two examples on the table, there is the ban on smoking in public places and the reason why businesses are unable to open for more than six hours on a Sunday. I'm sure you can think of many more, but you get the idea. Steve
  15. Yes, I, like you, was very impressed by the man's conduct. He was not screaming for revenge, he was trying to keep things calm so that no one else had to go through what he was going through. These 3 guys were (allegedly) run down on purpose whilst trying to defend their comunity and property. I guess that its one of the reasons that the police dont expose themselves to situations where the same thing could happen. Steve
  16. Can you buy mods that will deliver more than 13 bhp for £1000?
  17. Would you go rioting and looting in flip flops? He looks like a student or tourist? I really find it hard to imagine any innocent bystanders in these situations! I think if I was to go rioting and looting I'd leave my bike at home, but lots of these don't seem to have that much sense.
  18. I'd hazzard a guess that the injured youth is in the thick of the rioting/looting and as such gets absolutely no sympathy from me.
  19. Well that bit of video just shows that there is no longer any honour amongst theives. I've just been having a look at what happened to the Riot Act and have discovered that it was repealed in 1973. This act was introduced in 1714 to handle situations that we now find happening in London and other cities. Basically, if a group of 12 or more people were deemed to be up to no good, the riot act was read by a public official and the assembled crowd had 1 hour to go home. After the hour was up, there were assumed to be no innocent bystanders and the forces of law could go in as hard as they liked and be immune to prosecution. It sounds just like what we need! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riot_Act Steve
  20. I'll be there way earlier than that, Mr. Railgun. I've only got a gentle 40 min drive. Steve

So it seems that the studs maybe do not come already fitted by the manufacturer. Can you describe to me, Pete, the exact differences in the tapered and non-tapered ends and what prevents the studs from being inserted too far so that they would protrude through the back face of the spacer and touch the rotor, thus stopping the two mating faces being in intimate contact? Steve

    *sigh*

If your spacers looked exactly like the ones in the video, then how the hell can you have fitted them incorrectly? I take it that they come with the studs fitted. I'm pretty sure the studs were already fitted as Matt B had stacked them all together and loosely bolted them for transit. That vid is exactly how I fitted them Then I absolutely fail to see how they could be fitted any way other than the correct way! It all depends now whether you just want to leave it alone or totally rub the guys nose in it by insisting that he shows you how they had been fitted before he corrected them. You would want to know this, of course, so that you could post it on here and prevent us all from making the same stupid mistake.... Steve

Good designers will be well aware of (and apply) a Japanese technique called poke yoke. Its all about mistake proofing things and making it impossible for something to be done incorrectly. Looking at the short video of fitting the Brembo spacers, that has been done well, if you tried to put the spacer on back to front, you would have no wheel studs to put your wheel on. Another example could be the anti-roll bar drop links. If the part really is not symmetrical, the designer could have used a different thread size top and bottom. The larger thread would not then have gone through the smaller mounting hole and the part could not be fitted upside down. Steve
  25. All of those measurements seen damn thin to me, eg, 67 microns = approx 2.5 thousandths of an inch. A sheet of 80 gsm A4 paper is 4 thou thick (100 microns) Then again, there is a lot more to think about than paint thickness. A big factor is the surface that the paint is actually applied to. We run 2 different automated paint plants, one is electrophoretic and the other is powder. We have to measure many things, eg, hardness, adhesion, chemical resistance, cure and colour. I get involved in the painting process as little as possible. Steve
