Rad Cooling Fans not working

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

When sitting in heavy traffic my engine water temp starts to increase gradually after 5 mins. As soon as I start moving again the water temp drops. Simple assumption is an airflow problem.

I've popped the bonnet expecting to see the rad fan going when running higher temps but it is not moving.

I've popped on the A/C also (I hope i'm right in understanding one of the fans helps with the A/C) but neither fan is operating.

Is there a simple checklist, course of action to determine what the fault is & how should I do it?

Ie: motors, relay box, fuse, ecu... etc.

its a 2005 350 with motor driven fans.

Thanks :)

Most likely the fans have had it tbh as it is a common fault. Been covered lot's of times so I've just listed a "few" threads that might help you out.

Two threads here for radiator fans refurb/fix:

http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/88321-carried-out-a-rad-fan-motor-fix-today-small-how-too/

Most people though tend to take the opportunity to upgrade to the Mishimoto fans:

Although you could get some second hand working fans/motors from zmanalex if you're interested in a slightly cheaper fix:

Thank you all,

That's pretty conclusive....

Why would both motors fail at the same time? are there any checks worth doing to ensure it is fan rather than a fuse... ?

Its a skyline 350GT V35 .... To my knowledge there are 3 sets of fuse boxes and 2 relay switches for fans. Each fan has its own relay & fuse. Is there a fuse which does both fans?

Err check the fuse !

Ok then , Skyline 350GT - where is the fuse that can cut both cooling & A/C fan?

I was just trying to add a little humour. ;) Have you tried taking a live feed to each fan and seeing if they kick in? That would rule out weather it's the fans or the fuse, also try checking the earths to make sure they are good?

Why would both fail? There both the same age... Probably the air con one went first so you might not have noticed that then when the cooling one goes there both knacked...

The fix is easy, check out the guides... Top tip, jack up the car and take it out from below (dead easy)...

Failing that I know Ewen at Clark Motorsport has the Mishimoto ones for much cheapness...
