Martinjj Posted August 30, 2014 Share Posted August 30, 2014 Tortoise shells can be repaired with fibreglass mesh if there are pieces missing, cracked shells can be glued, guess its better on larger tortoises than ones that are still growing. I would say it takes a specialist vet though. Sorry to say though but because of the animals slow metabolism if the tortoise is really badly injured then it could be a slow process until the inevitable happens, your vet will advise you of the kindest possible treatment. He has given us hope but at the same time has made us aware of the potential struggles out little man faces; predominantly infection. He has been kept in the reptile hospital to be wet bandaged twice daily and given antibiotics and pain relief, once all of bleeding/discharge has stopped he will require acrylics to repair shell damage but this is much further down the line. Poor fella must have been petrified; one of our neighbours knocked on our door with one tortoise saying that they found a dog running around with him in his mouth. We found the other one in horrific shape a few gardens down As dog keepers ourselves we appreciate that it is the owners fault and not the pet. Unfortunately for the dog he is malnourished and kept in the house, and frequently escapes on to the highway. Judging by the breed and the owners I assume it was a status purchase which is now neglected. We have reported the health and wellbeing of the dog to the RSPCA and have been advised to inform the dog warden of the incident and it's frequent escape. Unfortunately that's all we can do and our remaining tortoise (who was saved in time) has to be kept in the house as it is no longer safe outside in his enclosure. I think you've done the right thing in regard to the dog, by the sounds of it the owner is a right douche and doesn't deserve to have the right to keep animals. My friend asked his neighbour several times if he could stop his dog from being so noisy, because it was disturbing his family and keeping people awake all night. The dog kept yapping. One day my friend put the dog in his car and took it to Luton, which is quite a long way away. There, he released the dog, which went away yapping. Problem solved and no harm done to the dog. The dog will have been very stressed being dumped in an unfamiliar area. I agree. Sh*tty thing to do imo.
