More power from the exhaust ?

Hi all ...

Sorry for another thread on this . I have used the search but wanted more specific answers. I am looking into getting a new exhaust for my zed , originally a invidia or miltek with Berks HFC ..... As you can see from my choices I want a mid noise level exhaust with no drone . I was able to get a ride in a zed with the invidia / Berks combo ....was really nice but maybe a tad to loud/drone for me . My main issue is that I keep reading / hearing from people who run the Berks they don't pass the mot ... This worries me , as you might as well run decats . Also what actual power gains are there from HFC ? 5hp ? Yes I know they sound nice but actual ftlb/bhp gain? The cobra ones are just to much money if all your going to gain is 5bhp . Now this brings me to the next question .... What bhp gain would you get from a cat back exhaust ? Obviously you will only gain bhp after a uprev map .... But say you put the same car ( both with uprev) one with an cat back and the other standard .... 5-8bhp?

Another question ( sorry )

Is there any real gain from a cheap ( scorpion ) to a more expensive ( invidia) exhaust other than build quality ? I've noticed that the scorpion is only a 2.5 " and others are 3" or dual ..... Does this matter ? Does it relate to more bhp . On my last zed I had a scorpion and loved it but am I robbing my car of bhp ( after a map) if I run a 2.5" pipe?

Last one!

What increase in bhp ftlb does a standard HR make just with uprev ? Obviously all different from car to car but just after general gains

Thank for all your help :)

Don't know where all this talk about HFC's failing the MOT's comes from.

What would be the actual point of high flow CATs then if they fail the MOT all the time. Might as well all run de-cats if this was the case. I know a few have failed but the majority as far as I've read/ever heard have passed.

I have Berks HFC's with an Invidia Gemini exhaust system and my 2003 Zed passed it's MOT in May this year without any issues. Looking at my emissions certificate it wasn't even close to failing. ;)

I can't tell you one exhaust versus another in terms of gains, I'm sure if you flick through the dyno thread you can find some data.

What I can say is I run a cosworth panel filter, plenum spacer, berks and a scorpion and not only do I like the sound (i.e. no drone, not too loud, but you know when you boot it) but I'm quite happy with my 292bhp and 264 torques after a remap.

I know you don't want to hold back your power gains, but you have to hear the exhaust every second of every journey, so picking the noise you like outweighs 2-5 bhp difference in grunt IMHO. The improvement in driveability from the uprev should make you nice and happy, especially if you've got a noise you like, unless you're chasing numbers.

Just sayin'

What Stu said, 2-3bhp is neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things. I would definitely not opt for an exhaust that sounded in my mind no where near how I want my car to sound for the sake of a few bhp - that just seems daft.

Clearly the better made, higher quality exhausts are going to give better flow of air and hence better serve the engine. In the case of exhausts you get what you pay for in that respect however with most people making roughly similar gains on here I really don't think its worth worrying about - in terms of exhaust, go for the noise.

Not sure how many threads you have been reading about Berks HFC failing MoT - most threads I have read over the last 3 or 4 years show it passing. Occasionally you get fails but the majority pass - you just need to be patient and really warm the cat up before and during the test.

Appreciate the feed back ... My worrying about the berks maybe a bit ott then.

Stu- do you have a sound clip of your scorpion and berks ? I always loved the sound of mt scorpion as said but wandered if they would be to raspy with the HFC fitted as well .

Cheers

If you want mid level noise and no drone, decats is definitely not the way forward!

Not seen many 3" systems, i would only say 3" would be worthwhile if you are fi.

Just a short one, it was stone cold, so I didn't gun her too hard. I take another but she's sounding a bit sick at the minute.

With regard to MOT, I've only been through one and she passed with flying colours, the HFCs has only been on the car for about 30 mins when it went through the test.

There's a point at between 2.7k to 2.9k where if you sit in that rev range it definitely resonates a little, but I wouldn't call it drone. I tend to motorway cruise at about 73 (as per the optimistic digital speedo) so I avoid any legal aggro and the sound is fine. If I creep up a little over that, then it gets a little quieter. I don't do much motorway cruising and when I do, I tend to have the tunes on fairly pumping, so if you're worried you really need to get a ride in one with the setup you're planning.

I have a japspeed 3 inch exhaust system.

took the dcats out as the decibels output was probably 150

refitted the standard cats ... still on the loud side at 125 B) but my emissions were always good.

from a 0.2 to fail I have been at 0.02 ;)
