Just saw this, seems pretty ridiculous...

Electric racing series Formula E has come up with a novel way of grabbing the attention of a new generation of racing fans. When the series kicks off in September, viewers will be able to tweet their favourite racer. All those @mentions will be counted up, and the driver with the highest number will get an extra boost for the final lap.

Every car in this first season is a Spark-Renault SRT 01E, which has a 226bhp electric motor. During the race, each driver gets two boosts to be used when they feel it will give them the best advantage. Admittedly a single extra boost won’t see one driver surging past the whole field to victory, but it’s not hard to see drivers stealing one hard-fought spot. If you’ve spent a whole race holding your place, only to lose out thanks to something totally out of your control, you wouldn’t be best pleased.

Another concern is that drivers from countries with large populations will have an unfair advantage, while computer whizz-kids could easily run a script that’ll constantly tweet their favourite driver. Maybe we’re missing the point, but this seems rather ridiculous and way too open to abuse. Motorsports are so heavily regulated, it seems mad that something so arbitrary could have an influence on proceedings.

We’ll get to see how well it works out when the season kicks off in Beijing in September.

I like it! It's a gimmick, they know it is and fully admit it's to get more people involved in watching it.

Unlike F1 with it's DRS which is a gimmick they can't admit is a gimmick.

Also, the cars sound way cooler than the current F1 cars!

Formula E eyes in-race dynamic recharging to replace two-car format.

Formula E is hoping to introduce dynamic on-track charging in the future.

The goal was revealed as part of the announcement of a multi-year founding technological partnership with wireless technology company Qualcomm in Berlin, ahead of Tuesday's full unveiling of the new car at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The dynamic charging technology would allow the all-electric cars to be charged wirelessly during a race, with plans to have a 'racing line', and an 'energy line', on which the cars could recharge.

There is no specific timeline on the dynamic charging, Qualcomm only revealing that it is likely to be available in a low single digit number of years.

Formula E Holdings boss Alejandro Agag confirmed that when the technology is available, the series will look to change its current proposed race format, which includes two races in two separate cars.

"Absolutely, we are open to this technology,

"If the technology is available, then we will work towards introducing it, and we will make changes to the format if required.

"What we would need is approval from the FIA, but that is something we can work on in the future.

"It's a vision at the moment, but it's our vision. That kind of technology is what we're here for."

What will be available next year is Qualcomm's 'Halo' charging system, which allows cars to charge wirelessly from a pre-determined parking position.

The series' safety cars will use the system, while it will be offered commercially to any of the 10 teams taking part in the 2014 championship.

What next? "Formula E drivers will have access to a small arsenal of deployable weapons to use whilst on track - such devices as radio jammers to momentarily cease communications between competitors cars and their garages, or small EMP devices to momentarily disable propulsion of other drivers"

So far five F1 Drivers have signed to do the Series.

Franck Montagny

Lucas di Grassi

Jaime Alguersuari

Karun Chandhok

That's because they are probably looking for a drive after their F1 career comes to an end.
