Never driven the estate version to be fair, but the hatches were a great and very rewarding drive. They'll be lighter than your other options too, so that should make them a bit more dynamically interesting.

 

Actually, have a look at the Vauxhall Omega. RWD, loads of room, quite bargelike but very comfy and very easy to hang the arse out if you wish.

My neighbour had an 04 plate Mazda 6 Sport, just sold it for £2k with 80k on the clock and having helped him detail it a few times, was immaculate, not a spot of rust.
