Another intake thread!

After scouring the threads for actual power gains for various intakes, im probably more confused than before.

 

1/ i was led to believe that the stock intake is about as good as it gets.

 

2/ some threads claim average of 10-15bhp with kits like K&N Typhoon, Apexi Power etc

 

I know manufacturers always give amazing claims, but would really like real world honest figures

 

Anyone here care to give their experiences? this will help me decide on whether to get a kit or not.

OEM air box with PPF and larger velocity stack is the way to go

I think the noise is more the reason to buy one than power gains.

 

The Stillen high capacity one or the Rtcustomz and a decent filter are good for gains on the 350.

You don't buy an induction kit for gains, you buy them for the awesome sound Which more than makes up for any minuscule undetectable power loss through heat soak imo

well i was going for one with a decent heat shield, but the car is growly enough, in fact at 2000rpm the cabin noise is a little too much with this set-up, i might seek a non resonating centre pipe at some point!

 

but what's a velocity stack and PPF? everytime i think im starting to know this car , Zaman puts me back in my box lol

The velocity stack is the little trumpet (inside the airbox, so you can't see it) that flows the air into the intake pipe after it's gone through the filter. It's an aerodynamic tool to decrease turbulence in the intake system and improve flow. The 2006 airboxes had a bigger (better) velocity stack that the 03-05 ones, so the best possible intake for performance is a 2006 airbox. You can try and get a used 2006 one, or you can buy a kit from RT customz that retrofits a bigger velocity stack onto an earlier airbox.

even my garage engineer who isnt a 350z specialist said, that he reckons the intake side of things is very restrictive ,

 

sooo a new thing to buy, a 06 air box !

The cold air kits show heat soak on dyno's as it can't simulate the real "in world" air flow over the engine on a dyno.

Not worried about it, I just can't justify splashing out £150+ for the PC and then paying additional money in fuel consumption everytime I start it up...

Why would you add a performance mod and expect the car not to use more fuel. Best idea for people is to keep the 150 quid and fill the tank with it if you are worried about mpg.

...to echo neil to a certain degree, this talk of induction kits losing BHP over stock does my head in! The difference is probably about the same as getting out the car and leaning on the back of it in BHP power terms ie negligible.

 

As every induction thread concludes - if every possible horse under the bonnet means the world to you, leave it stock. Otherwise induction kit to make it sound like a proper sports car.

Just use your pre 06 one and get a velocity stack from RTB same thing effectively

RTBiscuit, he made up a tonne of inserts for the pre 06 box - a small velocity stack which takes about 10 mins to install. He might still be selling them, drop him a PM and ask.
