nixy Posted July 7, 2008 Share Posted July 7, 2008 As digsy suspected: bike released today after being forcibly kept by police even though we had our own recovery in place. 399.38 plus another £6 per day as from today! Breakdown: 105 removal 6 per day storage 135 crane lift (the bike was pushable on its own wheels!) 55 labour 35 cleaning - what? VAT I was so angry I had to come home from work early! nixy Posted July 7, 2008 Author Share Posted July 7, 2008 John Macadam & son of Carnforth obviously make rather a lot of money out of this - especially as there were 3 bikes involved and they have all been charged the same! Why the hell would you need to lift a bike that could be wheeled off the road with a crane? Not to mention he had his own recovery in place but the police insisted on doing it this way so they could examine it. So far this accident has cost £650. ZeddZ Posted July 7, 2008 Share Posted July 7, 2008 I hire Ifor Williams trailers and one of my customers hired a plant trailer which he used to collect a stolen wood chipper.The police down in Ayrshire nicked him at 2 in the morning,noticed that the chipper had been reported stolen and carted him off to the local station.A recovery firm was contacted from the station and they picked up my trailer with the chipper on it.The following morning I got in touch with the police to arrange collection and was told it wouldn't be processed until the following day. In the mean time I got the details of the chipper owner who lived in Glasgow and phoned him.He was sending someone to pick the chipper up the following day so he said they would collect trailer and chipper and we could split the £175+vat recovery fee.Ideal for me because it saves me 50 mile extra journey and we each pay half. Phoned up the recovery firm to arrange and was told in no uncertain terms that it was £175 for the trailer and £175 for the chipper even though they used my trailer to recover the chipper. I was under the impression you can't be charged for a service you haven't requested i.e. window cleaning or bike storage. How many days did they keep it? If you were told you could collect it and then didn't turn up for a week I'd understand charging for every day but what did they need to store it for? If its dated Thursday/Friday then I'd tell them to feck right off as that isnt a reasonable amount of notice. Nix: I'd argue all the way on that one. Get on to Citezens Advice and see what they say. I can see lots of room for arguement around some of those points and certainly would be paying all of it (cleaning epsecially!!!), and for the crane lift, I'd want to see that they'd split the cost across all the bikes recovered assuming they were all done on the same recovery vehicle. nixy Posted July 7, 2008 Author Share Posted July 7, 2008 It would seem this is something they can do if they insist on keeping your vehicle for accident investigation purposes. We were only given notice today that we could collect it and obviously the lakes is a long way from where we live but still they will charge a daily fee from today. The actual invoice they have sent is for the statutory amount the police state - i.e 105 quid plus 12 per day storage (they've kept it a week, their choice not ours!) but all of a sudden lots of extras are owing which aren't even on the invoice - probably as they don't want the police to know what they are really charging! Worse than clampers and taking advantage - two of the others involved in the accident will probably never work again - hope they enjoyed ripping them off too! I guess most of the time the insurance stumps up - but not if you're only third party! I'm contacting the police tomorrow to find out what their policy is on this, then i'm going to have to pay for it and Martin is kindly going to just get it the hell out of there for me so I can pick it up later and then start trying to salvage any money back but I've probably got no chance! If not you shouldn't be paying anything. If you were innocent and the police requested they keep your vehicle to assit with investigations they should pay, and usually do. Andy Posted July 8, 2008 Share Posted July 8, 2008 A friend of mine was involved in an accident recently (he was found to be not at fault) At the time of the accident, he was arrested and taken to the Police Station and his car was put onto a low loader and taken away. They had it for approximatly 2 weeks and once the investigation was dropped and he was totally cleared, he was give his keys back with not a penny to pay. I would say that they are well out of line with the majority if not all of the charges they are attempting to land on you. Definatley worth a call to CAB to get their point of view. I put in a verbal complaint against a female (f**king bitch) orifice as she accused me of taking drugs. My parents also complained against her as she was giving me abuse as my parents paid my insurance on my first car, mum was not amused. I was pulled for the first time 3 days after passing..... The best one was when I got pulled recently for my slightly small front reg plate... They went on about how it was for my benefit as if the car was stolen their nifty number plate reader would find my car. However with a small plate it wouldn't. I said 'great but what happens if my motorbike is stolen?' This was 3 days after a nugget on a stolen bike with 3 people on it hospitalised 10 folk at a parade in the city. The policeman just shut up. Lecture over! Yes, I'm not the biggest fan of the police as my ex () brother in law turned into a w4nker when he joined and then left his 2 year old daughter to shack up with his probationer WPC. I have had some good run ins (can you call them that?) with the poilce. Met some real decent ones bu had a few sour ones two. You know what they say, if you get good service you tell 1-2 people. If it's bad you tell 8-10. Anyway Ming is a daredevil drug buster! It's the hum drum PC 'I'm in the police as I couldn't think of anything better to do' Plod that I'm not keen on.
