Advice on upgrading Macbook to El Capitan

After a bit of advice from Mac users and tech gurus here. I've got a Macbook pro which I bought in 2011 and I've not upgraded the OS as of yet. Its still running perfectly fine on Snow Leopard, but now getting to the point where some programs need El Capitan to run properly or update.

I've been putting off upgrading the OS as I've heard mixed reviews, but think I probably now should do. I've got a dedicated external drive which I've backed up using time machine.

Are there any issues I sound be wary of when updating? Anything else I need to do to ensure a seamless update?

Thanks

Chirag

I just updated it via the App Store, took an hour so including download, everything worked afterwards, then did another backup. It wasn't a painful process, not sure what issues you've read in the mixed reviews, seems to be ticking over nicely for me. Think I had this handy but it took care of itself.

PS - I didn't leap from Snow Leopard straight to El Capitan

Been using the iMac that Bradders sold me - that was a 2011 and its running perfectly on the new OS. put Office for Mac on it at the weekend and that runs fine as well

Also upgraded 1 x 2012 Mac Mini and 2 x Macbook Air they were a 2014/2015 models but again seamless upgrade. as long as you do a back up - go for it

I just updated via app store

El Capitan is fantastic but my mbp is a late 2013 model which is spec'd up so I've never had any issues with speed. My 2015 iMac doesn't have an ssd and I find it slow loading but fast once running.
