S7nny Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Hey everyone. This is going to be pretty vague, so I apologise in advance. When the engine is cold and I start my Z up it sounds like the idle is quite loud. I'm not sure if this is a standard 350 trait, or if it is slightly abnormal. I've tried videoing it but the sound quality isn't good enough and doesn't really highlight what I'm hearing. I did have a search for similar issues but couldn't find anything. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Quote
Puffmac Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 I'm not sure about the earlier engines, but at least on the HR engines (later model cars), they idle about 1800rpm when cold for a couple of minutes before slowing down to normal idle. Quote
Alex350z Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 What are the revs at and what do they drop to once warm? Mines a lot louder cold than it is once its warmed up. Quote
TT350 Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Clutch? They're noisy on the Z. Whirry grindy. Depress the clutch pedal while in neutral and see if it goes away. Quote
S7nny Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 My bad; should've specified what I had! Mine is a 2006 GT DE. Depressing the clutch does reduce the whirring sound, but still leaves quite a loud idle. I'll check the Rev count when I'm next in it and see where it idles on cold and then I'll see how it is when it's warmed up and report back! Compete spaz when it comes to these things so thanks for being patient! Quote
Juggalo Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Mines a 2006 GT DE. Cold it idles at 950ish for a couple of mins.. Then settles to 650ish 1 Quote
cs2000 Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 I have a 2004 GT DE and yes initial cold idle is rather loud. As for idle speeds, measured these about a year ago. Look at RPM/Min (4th line down) Cold http://vid142.photobucket.com/albums/r103/computerstar2000/226D4072-F1D8-48E8-A929-14EBDBEB00EA-4624-000002D30183FE92.mp4 Warm http://vid142.photobucket.com/albums/r103/computerstar2000/0A4F61B6-335E-49C9-A708-154930D524EC-4624-000002D3135E007E.mp4 Quote
brillomaster Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 silly question... does it have oil in it? Quote
S7nny Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 So 1400 cold and 650 warm. How long should I give it before we can all agree that the engine is warm? Quote
S7nny Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 (edited) Yeah, oil is all good! I'll double check tomorrow in case I'm losing some somewhere! Edited September 2, 2015 by S7nny Quote
Tom-89 Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 mine idles high as well for the first few minutes and then settles down. guess it's similar situation to having a choke on an old car? Quote
S7nny Posted September 2, 2015 Author Posted September 2, 2015 May just be me being paranoid, but better safe than sorry, right? Quote
TT350 Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 (edited) Just a thought mine idles (or did idle) at 1100rpm because I got it set like that because I felt it idled better at that speed. Maybe the previous owner had the same done? Edit. Yours idles at 650rpm. Ok. I think maybe you're just over thinking it Edited September 2, 2015 by TT350 Quote
S7nny Posted September 3, 2015 Author Posted September 3, 2015 Okay, just tested it out. It idles cold at 1400rpm and 650/700 when warm. Do we just assume I'm being paranoid? 1 Quote
Toon Chris Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Probably. You don't have an exhaust flexi-pipe leak do you. Quote
S7nny Posted September 3, 2015 Author Posted September 3, 2015 I might bug Tom (posted above) and see if he wants to meet up and compare cars! Quote
