If you get to the point where you have actually got a bike of your own i would definately recommend doing a track day. Not to play being Valentino, but because you will learn more in one day about control, grip, positioning, braking etc than you will in years of road riding. It doesn't matter what you ride either, you see all sorts on track days, not just race reps. Its knowing theres no body coming the other way, theres no lamp posts etc and theres loads of run off if the worst happens.
You will gain loads of confidence, and you will be faster AND safer. IMO anyway,
