Danger of burning out the ignition?

Hi guys,

new to this forum, picked up a Skyline 350GT the other week (350Z with 4 seats) and have a question......

I always remember years ago it was a bad thing to do to leave your ignition switched on for prolonged periods of time without starting the engine.......

I've got to update the Pioneer Avic 900 in the Skyline but it reckons it needs 9 minutes to do it's job......

Do you think it's safe to do this without the engine running?

I don't want to burn anything out for a simple firmware update.........

Of course, I could drive it out and leave it running but the garage and parking is tight and 9 minutes of idling takes away 9 minutes of fuel that I could burn driving instead..... ;)

Cheers,

Darren.

Thanks guys!

It wasn't going to be too much of an issue running the car for 9 minutes, just a pain to get it in and out of the garage and anything more than 30 seconds running inside results in slight dizziness

I must admit to being a little reluctant on the 4 ignition cycle fix to get rid of the airbag light but that went fine :teeth:

It's a shame the Pioneer doesn't fire up with the ignition in the off (or at least the 'unlock') position....That may be a future fix I'll perform at a later date (tapping into the lighter socket for 12v supply)......

Thanks for the welcomes and the SOC invite.....

Turns out I can get away with not having the ignition lit by waiting one minute after unlocking for the immobiliser to kick in then switching to 'on'....I still get a live feed to the Pioneer and lighter but the dash doesn't light up :D

Shame that having the update on the SD card for the Pioneer isn't being recognised

Maybe I'll go for the complete 2013 map and traffic camera update advertised on the auction site for £30
