Just booked my written exam... Don't expect most of you will know what this it, but suffice to say I'm be chuffed to bits if I pass it! If I do, a pair of HFCs are on the cards for Christmas... If I pass the 8Hr practical next year as well, then maybe I'll think about some lowering springs and stiffer ARBs too... wish me luck!

"Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert - Wireless"

 

The CCIE range of exams are the pinnacle of exams for Cisco, who are a leading network equipment manufacturer. I basically spend my days designing, selling and troubleshooting large WiFi networks and security solutions to support hundreds / thousands of Users in places like Banks, Hospitals, big Corporates, Universities, etc... There are thousands of people across the world with various CCIE qualifications of one flavour or another, but only about 100 people with this particular qualification. The CCIE certification is well respected within the IT industry, it gives me leverage to demand more money from my employer (or makes going contracting easier, if i chose to go freelance) and it gives customers a bit more confidence that I know what I'm doing.

Yep, that's the one... This is the syllabus for the exam - it's marked out of 1000 and you need 850 or more to pass... I got about 846 /1000 when I last tried this a few years ago. After that (if I pass) there's an 8hour practical exam in Brussels before I get my CCIE 'badge'. Lots of work has gone in to this already and there's lots more to follow, but it'll be good for my career and hopefully well worth the effort.

Hah, I work for BT (and I may regret saying this, I'm not sure) but if any of you ever have problems with a service BT is providing for you (personal, business, phone, TV, Internet, whatever...) just let me know. There are some cases where we can help gee things along a bit if you're stuck with a problem and aren't making the progress you'd like. (There are also some things where it's illegal for me to help you because of the way BT is regulated by the government so I can't help with everything, but I'll try my best)

The CCNAs are a good introduction... if your employer will pay for a course, you can go on a 1 week bootcamp of hands-on training and the exam at the end.

 

In some respects the CCNA is the hardest exam of them all because many of the concepts are new to you... after that, things like CCNP / CCIE are really just building on that initial knowledge by adding more complexity.

 

Who do you work for? Cisco / Cisco Reseller / Cisco End User?

Well.... today was exam day and the results are in!

 

I scored 972/1000, which is a pass! Yay me :D

 

Still haven't qualified though; the next step is an 8-hour practical assessment in Brussels! :(

How long did you study for?

 

Not long, a few weeks maybe? But I've been heavily involved in the Industry for almost 10 years so there's a lot of experience underpinning the short study time...

I never get more than 1mb ish. avg - 500-800kbs.

 

line area = 5mb. BT said I should get at least 2mb. Never happend lol.

 

Sorry mate, it's one of the few things I can't do much about... There are so many things that affect the speed you get it's about impossible for anybody to guarantee anything. They did find out that a lot of the noise on a line (and more noise = lower speed) can be caused from within the home. To help eliminate some of the noise, you can get fit different faceplates to your fit to your wall outlets that better insulates them from the general RF noise in your house, it's supposed to help, but "mileage varies" as they say... Also, for anybody else reading, this isn't BT specific - anybody using an internet connection that is essentially based on a phone line, can potentially benefit from this.

cheers, yeah I have my router going straight to the master socket.

 

BT have done better than my previous which was Orange on about 100-200KBS and they kept throttling me :(
