All depends what you already have, if you have a PC and a wireless router you don't necessarily need to buy new hardware :wink: Need decent speakers though at least. Well personally I would spend what you can on decent speakers rather than a fancy network amp or such like, all depends on budget and personal taste etc though really.... Well personally I would spend what you can on decent speakers rather than a fancy network amp or such like, all depends on budget and personal taste etc though really.... I would just go for quality sound over gimmicks all day long.... I agree totally, I'll search for speakers, pref wireless and see what I can find. Just sick of sh1tty laptop speakers and would be nice to stream from phone over wireless or btooth too but not a massive hardship and can always go for something a bit more sophisticated when I've got the money to justify it. Chesterfield Posted January 7, 2013 Share Posted January 7, 2013 Usually use AirPlay, but am in the middle of converting everything to stream via Raspbmc instead on my RPi. Have tested the setup and it works fine, just need to purchase the NAS for it now and transfer. Will be using UnRAID for it, works best for my needs. Currently use xbmc myself for all media, using the android app on the phone also allows you to select which tv set etc you want to stream the media to. Start watching a movie downstairs, pause, and then pick up at the same point upstairs etc.. I use QNAP nas devices, haven't had any problems. A proper RAID NAS box (like the QNAP or Synergy stuff) is going to be a lot more expensive and has no option for adding extra drives: Once you're done, you're done. With something like this I can always add drives of differing sizes whenever I like and they don't have to match, although there is a clear performance hit on that. A £1500 solution becomes a lot more palatable if I can start with a £200 box and add stuff on rather than get hit with the full whack in one go Case I already have along with PSU, RAM I might be able to steal out of my old PC as well if it's compatible, and then it's just the drives themselves. You can set up a Last.fm account, then stream music by genre, and have new bands suggested to you - can stream it to any supported device, so an android tablet, iphone, a streamer box like the WD Live! unit etc.. You can use spotify to do something similar. I use Google Play Music. You can upload 20,000 songs for free, and buy more from the play store, then just stream it down to any pc or tablet or smart phone - just plug your phone into a dock and away you go. The above 3 also have the advantage you can be anywhere in the world and still get your music collection, although if your using it all the time whilst away from the home you can soon use up a lot of data. If you dont want to use up bandwidth for the sake of it, the other option I use is to get a cheap NAS box. Ive a D-link one, with 2 x 2tb hard drives in it. It sits under my stairs plugged into my router out of the way. I store all my media on it - so movies, photos, music, ebooks etc... Then I can access it from anywhere in my house / garden via my wifi. In the living room I stream it through my media HTPC using XBMC. Upstairs in the bedroom i used a little streaming box WD Live! which does the same. In the garage I stream it all to my Samsung Galaxy S3 which I plug into an old hifi and can listen to all my music whilst working out. Same in the garden - just plug the phone into a dock and instant music whilst having a BBQ. My home cinema amp actually has airplay on it, and DNLA so I can send any media from any of my portable devices directly to it, so I could just store all my media on my phone and use that to send it to devices - but its not quite as practical as the NAS / Google Play Music method. Main reason why i got an iPhone5 on 3 as I get unlimited 3G so only got a 16GB iPhone but it has access to 300GB music :wink: My PC stays on 24/7 so that doubles as my server and I dont need to stream because I have every room with network sockets, except the bathroom. Only thing thats wireless us my phone and tablet. Lad at work streams music to his iphone 4s via last.fm and rakes up over 1.2gb every month just through listening to music on his walk to work & back. Seems to use bandwidth just for the sake of it. Ive got a 32gb card in my galaxy s3 along with its normal 16gb storage, so that gives me nearly 50gb of storage. I can keep plenty of music on there for day to day listening and thats why im only paying £6.99 a month on my orange tarriff.
