Budget?

A great "bridge camera" capable of some superb results is the Sony NEX-5a. Whilst technically not a DSLR as a starter camera if it's in price range would be well worth it.

Otherwise; tried and tested but the Canon 600D is a superb value piece of kit now: And maybe spend a bit extra on a Sigma 17-100 lens or similar.

Hi all

Can anyone recomend a good DSLR camera forum for my father to join, as he feels he is not getting the best from his camera?

Thanks in advance

T

I wonder how many people buy a comparatively expensive DSLR and then just use it in full auto mode and never realise the full potential?

I found http://photo.net to be quite good advice-wise - despite running the most antiquate piece of forum software you can find on this planet.

Otherwise http://photonotes.org are also a must read - even if it's not a large forum as such.

The trouble usually is forums tend to be full of people with strong opinions and especially camera gear nuts, and sorting out the useful and sensible advice is difficult. Learning by experimenting together with a book explaining the basics tends to be more satisfying.

I'm still using a long in the tooth Olympus C8080 and see no reason to change it atm. I have studied the manual and learned how to access and use the features, but I invariably get a better photo if I use auto and leave the camera to know what it's doing. Then again, a C8080 is not a DSLR.

one of the ones i used to use at first was ephotozine it allows you to add pictures and then people give you comments on how to improve it there is also monthly tasks and ideas and you can view others portfolios for ideas and there are plenty of tips and people ready to give help, havent used it in at least a year myself now so not sure if its the same but i enjoyed it at the time there is also picturesocial that i was told was good but never really used it myself i just go out and expiremnt on my own now and play till i get results i want.

I do a lot of photography and the advantage of digital is that pictures are instant on the PC so you can see what you should and should'nt be doing I don't go on forums but I use this site all the time for advise and when buying gear, at the moment I'm bidding on a very nice 70mm-400mm Nikon lens for my DX40x it's not the camera thats take a good picture it's the quality of the lens!
