AK350Z Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 A sort video clip from the turbine fire you may have seen in the news last night. I think its taken after the fire, just spinning on its tower! It's a Vestas one btw! Quote
geoff-r Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 how the hell did it happen? Too much wind for the the wind turbine? Quote
M13KYF Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I thought these things had brakes on them to prevent them from spinning too fast Quote
AK350Z Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 Oddly enough it's the same model as the one that caught fire at the (Nissan?) factory in Sunderland the other year. That suffered from a pitch failure and caught fire from the overheating mechanical brake disk. For the most part turbines rely on aerodynamic braking from the huge drag you can summon by putting the blades at 90 degrees to the wind. Quote
Tarmac@TarmacSportz Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I think thats pretty poor engineering tbh... It should withstand high winds, thats what its powered by to spin the rotors and generator to produce electricity Tell me some bright spark didn't think that one day we will have the strongest winds for a quarter of a century. ?? Or am I being picky Quote
AK350Z Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 No, you're right, its just poor engineering. That Vestas turbine design is over 15 years old now though, and things have moved on. What ever pitch system they have obviously isn't very fail safe, and if it fails in high winds with some angle still on the blades, they are going to still do what they were designed for - to catch wind! rabbitstew Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Mad! Just was reading about this on the news. I had visions of it spinning around so fast that the propellers end up flying off like ninja stars causing no end of damage! Quote
Chris`I Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Mad! Just was reading about this on the news. I had visions of it spinning around so fast that the propellers end up flying off like ninja stars causing no end of damage! Now that would be far more entertaining Quote

If you look, you can see the solid multi-tonne lump of the generator hit the ground near the srevice van! Quote
rabbitstew Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Holy cow. Was that a transit parked under it? I would not want to be trying to explain that one to the insurance company! "I only went back to the van to get a screw driver....." Theres no end of wind turbines around my way, I darent drive by them now after seeing that clip! Quote
Lexx Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I can remember driving up the A19 past the Nissan one when that was burning. No-one was paying any attention to the road and all staring at the turbine! Quote
