Quickie Q

Ok, planning on getting a Zed in late spring/early summer 2012. Been looking at a few and decided to leave it until after this years snow lol (and to save a bit more for the deposit :p). I've seen a lot of forums talking about oil consumption on the rev-ups 2006. Is this just an American issue or does it apply to them over here in the UK too? Also is it just 06'/56' or are there more. Had ideally planned to get an 07', but if I can get an 06'56' with the newer interior that would be nice and slightly less, plus its whatever is there at the time. I heard people were having engine replacements but obviously if I buy one next year theres bugger all chance of that, any advice??

I would avoid the REVUP engine if possible. While you could get a good one there's a fair possibility you won't.

The issue is crap piston rings. If you are going to rebuild for FI (uprated internals) should be OK.

I am a bit bias. I have a 2006 GT revup and I'm in the process of changing the engine to an HR(hopefully).

Sooo what are we saying then? Avoid all 2006?

 

What about buying an 07' or 57' or are they part of the rev-ups

 

Annnndd... should I then be looking at 55' and under?? I want the new interior :( lol

I would avoid the REVUP engine if possible. While you could get a good one there's a fair possibility you won't.

The issue is crap piston rings. If you are going to rebuild for FI (uprated internals) should be OK.

I am a bit bias. I have a 2006 GT revup and I'm in the process of changing the engine to an HR(hopefully).

 

I only know of half a dozen UK cars that have had the burning oil issue.

Key identifier is the bonnet buldge and twin intakes for MY07.

 

I have the revup 06 and 56, and yes it does use more oil, but nothing worth getting a mortgage over. If you go for the MY07 you'll get increased power.

If you can afford a 07' or later I'd say go for it. But make sure it's the later model i.e. a 313 with the HR engine (Bulge on the bonnet) and not a late registered revup (without the bulge).

 

And just to show how paranoid I am, :blush: , Also be careful that it's not an earlier model that someone has put a later model bonnet on.

 

But I'm no expert. I've only ever had the 313 HR so have no experience of the earlier engines. I've had mine about 15 months now and I've had no real problems with the HR engine.

Brilliant, thanks for the response! Been researchin the car for ages, wanted one last year but Sh*t out it sort of, then spent the money elsewhere... dumb i know. But were back in the running, so basically and 07' (making sure its a 313) and i should hopefully have no oil issues? or any others lol. (ive seen the previous ones lists, linkage, early clutches, boot struts, transmission wine, noise etc... lol). Right, head down, work hard get a good deposit put by, then summer... and funnily enough even with a 300 bhp car, im not that bothered about speeding at a million miles an hour... I'll be happy sitting in my little 350, knowing that in real world day to day, nothing much could touch it :) I like that sort of prensence (and boy what a presence,saw one infront of me in the motorway on sunday, BEAST :p heh. any other issues with 07' onwards plz let me know!

Ahh wait I forgot I was going to ask this, I'm sure theres a thread on it somewhere, but I just want a quick answer, My m8 has an S2000, I asked him what fuel do you use, normal. Can you fill the Zed up with normal petrol instead super expensive nonesense. Now I'm not after, .."oh it'll under perform slightly, might cos the engine to get a bit dirtier inside".... will it die, explode or break? Its petrol, surely it should work just fine and surely a gd few on here use normal petrol??

why scrimp an extra couple of pence a litre, ie 4quid a tank and compromise the optimal running of the engine?

Sorry I am lazy arn't I? lol And in reponse, surely using normal petrol is not gona mean its got the performance of an Astra or wreck the engine, Id just rather know I can use whatever petrol is there when I need it lol.Anyway I'll have a bash at that link cheers!

most garages sell optimum/high ron fuel these days, The car will not run correctly, it will go onto high det map and theres still a risk that if you're ragging every rev out it that it could go boom. There is a risk. Nissan would not recommend 98 if the could have recommended 95. There is an obvious compromise.

on the motorway i seen 34 mpg... once......... i actually took a photo as i couldnt believe it, i usually average around 12mpg

 

you could end up paying in the long run alot more due to other engine problems etc.

 

I usually live by the motto "play the game but break the rules" but this is one rule I recommend not breaking. (i can't anyways as i'm mapped on 99ron :lol::) )

Just an American thing from what I've read. Interesting thing is that 98 Octane fuel can be difficult to get hold of in many parts of The States especially rural areas, could make a difference to how the engine runs and to the oil consumption but I don't really know :shrug:

 

 

From an American Forum

 

Yes, that is the premiun grade available in most parts of the U.S.

Some high altitude States have only 91 octane available as the premium. Your Z will run fine.

 

Octane ratings are worked out in a different way in The States, 91 Octane is around 95 over here.

30's?! Ooof that is good, bet it didn't last long lol. But yes ok the hint with an anvil is taken, buy the dearer stuff lol Anyway, got a bit to wait, not buying one until we've had this years...snow... and the following year when I've got it... theres a simple solution... a.) train to work...and b.) the trains are off, ill see you in a week. :D And I'm buying this to be my daily driver (30miles daily 15 ther and 15back to work ...mmmm) :) Should be interesting

This will be my only car,im not rich lol, kept outside (but trust me I keep my cars clean n' healthy B) ) its gonna see sun, rain (mainly lol), snow up to its bonnet. I'm gonna have the full high performance experience and all the pains in the Ar*e that come with it, but hopefully none too much since these thing have a 'reasonably' good realiability rating. It'll get kept until it dies, or I loose my job, so hopefully the first one with wayyyy over 100K. This will be my peak car, i wont get any quicker or better than this unless i win the pools....doubtful. How many of you use it as a daily? ... anyone? :shrug: lol

Majority of owners on here use it as their only car.

Most average 22-26mpg for combined driving. Like every car - mpg is affected by how heavy your right foot is, and how you use your gears.

me aswell mate, im not rich either which why it makes sense to look after it as best as possible. I'm only 23 with lots of bills to pay. Theres more than one zed hovering around on here with over 100k on her and still going strong as she was when she was a youngster :lol:

This is more like my normal ba718aa9.jpg but usually the speed is a fair bit higher. That was around town in traffic.

 

With mixed driving I see around 18mpg, most others on here see 20-25mpg

Thanks for the post, it fills me with confidence I'm making a good choice! 22-25...i can live with that, and yes I know its up to me how much fuel i use, prob a lot :p Good to hear too, I'm 25, well ill be 26 by that time and only 1NCB because of an idiot at a roundabout :angry: lol So you can imagine my insurance for an 07'... its...well high, like 1700 high. I pay 900-1000 just now. Can i ask if i may be so cheeky your insurance? NCB and years of driving? lol Thing is... with 55' plate and under 1300-1400 , which is fine for me, but take a step to the 313, 1700-1800... ridiculous, but im willing to pay it in full. VILE. :shrug:

when i bought it (06 revup) with nismo kit, wheels etc, i had been driving 3.5 years, 0 no claims bonus and a crash 2 months previous at 5k and i was 1300, i'm now 1k a year with around 5 years driving and 2years no claims with all mods insured(on a multi car policy with my suzuki swift sport). Due again in november/december time so hopefully it will drop as i will have 3years on each car.

I'd say forget waiting and buy now. Picked mine up at the beginning of April this year and loving every minute of it. Used daily when not working from home and get usually about 360 miles out a tank, motorway in then A roads on the way back. As for petrol I do what it says in the manual but personally don't mind paying a few pence extra. Only downside to ownership so far is having to resist the urge to making a few modifications, although that has already started after having fitted K&N panel filters the other week, S2k stubby and new 350z boot carpet

Well I'll be 4 and half yrs driving and 1NCB by the time i go for one, I used moneysupermarket and its Elephant that keep coming up cheapest, I'm with Admiral just now (although there bascially the same company), so need to hunt about, I'm always weary of going to some of the smaller specialised companies as some people suggest on here. Hmm, but we'll get to that. As for mods, I like a smooth clean classy car (yeah i know booo...whatever :p ) my current car is this.... ( and don't mock! Its a gd'un lol)

 

 

K&N drop in (probably useless), Short aerial that doesn't wave about, its solid (which id also do to the zed), blacked out 3/4s and rear window and ... Drilled/grooved brake discs with Mintex pads. When I get a Zed prob only thing ill do is, filter, aerial, tinted window on back and those tiny little buggers at the side. Hopefully get a silver one btw! I like that colour.

 

Ive test drove two Zeds, both 2006 GT's and Ive heard people say its budget 350 (now hold itlol), because you get all the kit, leather cruise, the looks! for cheap..ish, and the Zeds like that aswell, spec a porsche, bmw or whatever like a Zed and you'd pay a fortune! And on another note, I do know what expense is with this, even though its only a 2.0L compared to the big Z, a major service... why that'll be around £600... but obvioulsy I found it and got the belts done for 380... :thumbs: Savn' those pennies.
