How to chose the right sound

Recommended Posts

I’ve spent months looking at exhaust and listening to youtube clips. I want the tips to look good, the sound to be loud, the drone to be bearable and the rasp to be minimal. The Japspeed K1 is actually my favourite (ignoring anything that’s over a grand). I’ve been keeping my eye out for a used one but they aren’t cropping up. I’m thinking of going the custom route but there are so many choices and I don’t know why some systems are designed one way rather than the other. Perhaps you guys can explain.

Back boxes.

Central box

Two individual boxes (I presume this is the loudest?)

Two individual boxes with smaller boxes on top

Mid Box

Resonated /resonated. Is this where the main drone and rasp comes from?

Y pipe

Does changing this really do much to the sound?

Thanks,

I have the Buddyclub system, i assume as your looking at the K1 you want something with some noise.

It is quite droney sat at 60.... but the noise it makes when planting it is such a smile factor!

I wouldn't want this exhaust on a daily because i think it would be a little too loud for every day as would the K1.

As for quality IMO its as good as you can get, the welds look perfect the fitment was spot on and tips look great.

Only issue i had was the silencer bungs are incredibly tight to put in....which is my excuse not to put them in anyway

Below is a few pictures of mine when it first went on.. :D

Good luck on your search B)

Blocko, I went for the Borla without the mid boxes. Running with a K&N typhoon induction kit. Makes a lovely sound everytime you use the gas pedal. No drone just that aggressive growl and whistle when you put your foot down. (YouTube 350z non resonated borla).

The tips are nice but if you don't like them, just get the garage to weld some different ones on!

If you know a reputable custom exhaust shop, then go visit and discuss. They should have years of experience dealing with all kinds of engines and there sounds. I have a really good one that I send people too and he really knows his stuff. They should know multiple combinations of HFC, mids and rears and will have plenty of tips for you to choose from.

Good luck on your quest.

Post a video so we can see and hear your final Choice!

Not cheap by any means, but I have an ARK GRiP cat back with Motordyne ART test pipes.

Loud enough to regularly turn heads, not overbearing so conversations are easy and I never suffer from drone. Also isnt a raspy set up and has a lot of tone. Having quite a few resonators must help I guess!

Would definitely recommend trying to attend some meets with a decent Z turn up to hear different set ups in the flesh!

I have a K2motor (US ebay vendor) 250 quid Chinese clone of the Japspeed K4, which in turn is a copy of the HKS hi-power dual. I'm thrilled with it. The sound is exactly as you ask, loud and deep, but not raspy and perfectly fine at motorway speeds. When you put your foot on the floor, all hell breaks loose.

They need custom work to fit under a viscous diff (but not if you have a base model).

I really need to do a sound clip for you guys, I actually feel really proud to have found such an awesome exhaust for so little money (even after delivery and customs), it even looks FANTASTIC, FAT blue burnt tips and that classic diagonally mounted backboxes shape, as well as being a true dual, it's win win win. I'll be fitting Wasso's pre-cut rear chargespeed to show them off as soon as he;s finished with it.

The prices go up and down between about 200 and 350 dollars, I guess depending on how many pieces he has at the time...

Here is the shop, but he doesn't have any at the moment, so there's a link below to the expired auction that I bought...look at that price :)

That is unbelievably cheap. How much did it cost you once you'd paid the shipping and the duty? Definately get a sound clip up ðŸ‘ðŸ»

All done, delivery and customs, and bearing in mind I had to go through 2 hours of dealing with assholes at the airport to get it out of customs (and bringing it home myself from there, after paying 130 bucks delivery or something was a pain in my arse, but I think that's a greek thing, I would expect your customs to be more orgamised and more cooperative, as well as cheaper). I digress...about 420 euro is the answer.

It sounds exactly like the K4 videos you can see, but I will get a clip up soon. It's particularly fruity at the 4k rpm sweet spot where our engine sounds like a big dog gargling while howling. lol. It's a bit flat up top, turns into more of a roar, but at low rpm it's quiet as a mouse.
