  1. Hi,where is the best place to pick up a separate ignition feed for an Auto gearbox "Tiptronic" switch unit? The unit plugs into the existing loom for the "Tiptronic" switches near the gearbox/centre console, but needs a separate feed when the ignition is on plus an additional earth. The other end of the wiring is connected to switches on the steering column housing. The unit should not be live when the ignition is off.Can I pick up a feed from the stereo head unit power wires?("Tiptronic" - Mercedes term for manual changes on an Automatic gearbox. On the 350Z - press gear lever forwards = change up, backwards = change down))

  2. My JDM auto coupe DE is giving a measured 24.9mpg on all roads commute including motorway at speeds to make progress and not save fuel. Measured in that I don't rely on the car computer, but fill up each time at the pump and note down the mileage and the fuel used.

Just fitted flyboy's airbox conversion (intake trumpet off HR) and I'll be looking to see if that makes a difference.

  3. As the spoiler is attached to the boot on the Zed I should be possible to measure any downforce created with say a rod attached to the underside of the boot pressing down on weight scales on the boot floor. Ideally with a remote display screen attached on the dash, but if you use your imagination the same effect could be achieved by a small volunteer in the boot with a suitable stick and some bathroom scales, and who could then shout out the readings!

Anybody got a small girlfriend? :D

Measuring the drag effect may prove more difficult, but if you have more downforce together with slower lap times then the drag is too much.

  4. Save yourself some money and buy an OMBDMATE OM500 JOBD code reader from Amazon. I paid £29.95 for mine.

It works on all JDM imports and can clear fault codes too.

Have you checked you have the correct size tyres on?

My Fairlady Z had mismatched 40 profile Yokohama tyres on the rear when we picked it up, and the slip light came on a few times on the way home.

  5. Jetpilot - I'd love to, but I'm a bit paranoid on the roads these days after a nice man in a shiny metallic blue BMW stopped me for a chat and show me a video on the M6 a while ago.

It wasn't in the Zed, but my old Merc estate, and I'd just speeded up slightly so an Audi TT could safely pull out of the middle lane behind me without running into the back of the road hog in the middle lane which he was quickly approaching, and sure enough the Audi slotted in right behind me. At that point my mirrors were filled with flashing blue lights from behind the Audi.....

The nice man subsequently explained he wasn't too bothered about me travelling at 82-83mph, but 87mph was a booking!

After the paperwork he told me he was actually a Merc fan and had his own V8 AMG.

So my impromptu spoiler test was conducted up to the maximum advisory road speed. ;)

Rich260 - feel free, and it will be interesting to see if you can achieve the same results.

Cue traders offering Nismo spoilers in a group buy.

  6. It's worth noting that MTEC heat treat their discs after machining, which may not be the case for some of the grooved/slotted discs on eBay.

Email Quote - "The discs are tested to 850 degrees and heat treated to 250 degrees.."

I'm thinking of getting a set as my discs are worn with a lip at the edges.

Just wondering what colour looks best with gold or silver wheels?

  7. A screenshot from that video shows that big wing is producing 288.6lbs of down-force at the rear, so much so that it is acting as a cantilever, with 96% down-force at the rear and only 4% a the front.

  8. Unfortunately I will not be ale to conduct any further testing today due to inclement track conditions!

    Snow spoiler indeed :)

  9. So, at the risk of slowing the car down with drag, does the spoiler/wing help the car go around corners any better?

If it does that then I'm happy.

  10. Err no - the original post was innocently made.

One of the reasons I bought this Zed was because I liked the Nismo styling, and wasn't keen on the bare-arsed boot look,

after following a black one without a wing/spoiler for a while one night, whilst the guys in Japan were still searching for a car for me.

  11. I didn't mean to start a war guys!

I just noticed the speed related effect occurring on the boot lid,

as a result of the fact the red light was bugging me when I noticed it after setting off.

I used the term wing because that's what everybody seems to call them on here.

Something is going on with the air flow, but I have to admit I haven't read up on any theory.

Anyway I'm prepared to be enlightened, so carry on...

  12. Do Wings work?

By that I mean do they generate down-force?

Well after an unscheduled test this morning I found out some of them do.

After setting off in rush hour traffic, I noticed the red warning lamp in the dash showing the boot wasn't quite shut properly.

I knew it would not be a problem though, as my genuine Nismo spoiler must weigh half a ton,

and there was no chance of the boot opening further and my laptop bag, which had caused the problem, falling out.

Anyway, with no chance of pulling over I carried on.

Accelerating on a short stretch of dual carriageway, the light started flashing and went out,

only to come back on again as I slowed behind another car on the motorway entry slip road.

Once on the motorway the light started flashing again and went out at about 60mph.

This cycle repeated until I got to work, where I could then see the boot wasn't closed on the catch properly.

The upshot is that the wing was generating enough down-force at 60mph plus to force down the boot lid and close the sensor switch.

Now if I could have got up to 100mph plus, would the boot have shut fully? :)

  13. Hi Shezza, is there any manufacturer's name on the air duct? I want one!

I was thinking of constructing one, because I don't like the vents cut through the bumper,

but it would be a lot easier just to buy one that fits.

Made in the USA according to the eBay listing.

OK - Looks like it is an EVO-R Performance Cold Air Intake Duct, 03-06 350Z available from http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/350z09b/11-2960

  14. Spotted a grey 350Z behind me on the slip road onto the M58 at Liverpool which turned off later on the A570 for Ormskirk / St Helens.

Maybe needs new tyres, as it was a bit slow on the first 'S' bend on the M58 where my winter Conti's took me round at 70mph. :)

I waved, but did not get one back when it passed me at about 85mph on the straight later.
