  1. Always get 3 quotes, Recommendations of competence and honesty are best. Never rely on an estimate. Dont pay up front. Make plenty of tea ! (oh and bacon sarnies go down well) (as does an attractive woman in the house)
  2. in excess of £150 So yes you're right £300 was too much for a cash on the side job, but you should have said no if he quoted it. If he didn't quote then you've learnt a valuable lesson......... Employ someone legit
  3. Try running a legitimate business and include the cost of employees, paye, tax, insurance, material increases and rising costs, then you might get a realisation of why we charge what we do. Then factor in all the customers who think you want cash, want to knock off VAT and tax and risk prosecution. Then factor in all the idiots who think its good not to pay the final installment or keep us waiting months for the payment, or bounce a cheque. I pay my employees in excess of £150 a day wages in order to ensure i get the right employee for the right job, thus offering the best possible product to the customer. Thats why I charge what I do....... if you choose to employ some untrained monkey to do a job for tradesmans rates, more fool you !!!!! Rant over
  4. Illegal immigrants!! That's the way forward mate. Put them up and they can renovate your house for food and lodgings! Don't start me off
  5. I love Miranda Also Me too. Couldn't fancy her though, to tall !!!! She would suit you Dave.. Although she would probably BOB you
  6. If you think its wrong, don't accept the quote and tell the guy you think its too expensive. If not get over it............ Or learn to lay laminate, any idiot with half a brain can do it and £300 for 7 hours suggests he has more brain than you think
  7. I think the main point in this whole conversation is simply put to bed like this...................... Get a quote, if you don't like it don't employ that person, if you do like it then pay it and it doesn't matter how long the guy took because its a quotation. If it took him 4 hours longer than he said, would you pay him 4 hours extra money? I think not !!!
  8. Responsibility! Fair enough. So where do you stand on gas fitters? They have a responsibility too, as if they get it wrong they could kill far more in one go than the single person a surgeon could. Everyone has there worth, I agree with that. Consultants deserve there pay, gas fitters probably deserve there pay as they have extra skills, responsibilities, qualifications etc. the same applies to structural engineers, pilots, etc. but for a joiner to charge what they do is wrong. I trained as a carpenter/joiner........................... what am i worth then?
  9. +1 +1 ... I can work from my bed though Is what you do in bed actually classed as a job though?
  10. £150 a day !!!!! I'll stay in bed first
  11. Started reading and got bogged down, so I've skipped right to the end for my 3 pennies worth (or £300) We train for a trade, we provide our expertise, our expensive tools (which incidently tend to speed the job up), we pay insurances to protect you and your property, and we pay our VAT and taxes. All this costs momney and has to be passed on. As I once told a customer about 22 years ago when I was half way though putting the roof on his extension I'd just built, (who incidently at the time worked in the 'City' and was paid (not earned) £60k plus a year), and then complained I was too expensive at £9 per hour......... 'Here are my tools, they are expensive so look after them, and call me to collect them once you've finished the job'!!! He rang me 2 weeks later and asked when I was coming back to finish the roof as he didn't have a clue what to do! I went back and informed him our prices had just risen to £11 per hour.
  12. Had to call into my local Nissan dealership today as the Navara had to go in for its first service inspection at 12500miles (thought it best to use a dealer for this first one, that was a mistake). On the forecourt sat a 55 plate 350 and a 60 plate 370. When I called back to collect the Truck this afternoon I thought I'd take a look at both. The 350 looked in good order, but suffering the normal cloudy headlights, but to my surprise it was only a cloth trim non-GT. I was surprised because it was up at £9475 !!!!! When I asked about the mileage etc I was informed what a great vehicle it was with every possible piece of kit that Nissan offered at the time, and a snip at the price as it only had 72000 miles on the clock. Given what I recently sold 'Miss Marmite' for I was too busy laughing at the salesman to hear what he had to say about the 370............. Presumably a super snip at £22950???????? I have a feeling it might be there for a while. And back to the dealership mistake................................. £250 for a first service and inspection. Thank God its a business expense and can be written off against my corporation tax.
  13. I do think colour plays a part.......... but not sure why it should?

  15. AMT started it ! Personally i never had an issue with people cutting me up or playing when i was in the Zed. I think it tends to be more a city thing though? Out here in the sticks life's just a little more sedate.

  17. Dave you're only writing stuff in the hope of being the 1mill post. And I'm not a typical Audi driver.........
