  1. I do not understand their logic. So a car modified for track use means you can have an non-airbag steering wheel and still be road legal.

But if you just want a non-airbag steering wheel because you like it then you can't have one?

  2. So from the security of his car the VW bloke is trying make himself feel more 'Alpha' by trying to belittle another man by making reference to the supposed size of his todger in relation to his choice of car (strange how only certain people make that connection).

I very much expect the irony was lost on him...

  3. +1 lockwood and greenwood.

There is another thread somewhere about the timing chain - I don't believe there is a set servicing interval for it. Not heard of many having it replaced but its tension can be checked to determine if it has stretched. Don't know about cost but I doubt its a short job... FWIW I'm on 140K miles and no issues.

  4. Hi folks,

Well I've spent today getting ready to change my rear wheel bearings - driver side noisy in particular. I've removed the axles for ease of access, plus will be dropping the diff soon to do the bushings. The driver side axle leaked oil as I unbolted it - not a huge amount but see pictures (the other axle was dry). I assume this is a seal within the diff? Is this a serviceable item and if so does anybody have them available as I may as well do it while the diff is out.

    Many thanks,

  5. Well by clocking up over 140K miles and doing my own servicing for the last few years - I've convinced the missus that 90% of buyers probably won't be interetsed, and trade dealer will rip me right off. And for the 10% who appreciate a well looked after motor, I'll probably get back less money than I've actually spent on mods - let alone the car itself. None of these points matter though because I'm not selling it. She's okay with it now.

My missus also spent £3K getting here eyes 'frinkin' lasered recently, which has improved her life. I argued that since I was born with superior genes and do not require such procedures, I can spend £3K towards something which will in many ways improve my life... such as FI (yeah I know I'll need a bit more dosh...).

Unsurprisingly, here she disagrees with my logic. She'll come round...

  6. Clutch can be changed on its own. You don't necesarily need to replace the flywheel unless the clutch has completely worn through and damaged the flywheel - but difficult to know this until the gearbox is out for the clutch change, but you probably will have noticed if the clutch got that bad.

If you are planning to go single mass (which is the flywheel anyway), then makes perfect sense to do this along with a new clutch.

  7. If you're concerned about the mileage on your engine, I'd suggest at least doing a compression test and perhaps an oil analysis. These things can give you lots of indicators about the engine condition (as well as the driving experience and general observations). If they throw up any signs of a problem then investigate further, but if serviced properly and not abused the 130K should be fine!

  8. Mine is at 140k and is fine mate, good and even compression across all cylinders, gearbox sound. Some suspension parts and other bits replaced/upgraded. I do all my own servicing as far as possible with high quality oil, etc. I stopped caring about the miles long ago! Don't know what the power output is now but my butt dyno is happy - hopefully I'll win the uprev raffle and get a more accurate assessment!!

For me, the zed is a keeper so when the engine or gearbox or whatever eventually dies I'll just rebuild or put new ones in!

  9. It doesn't have it own clips mate - it just bolts onto the bumper along with the undertray - just check how yours has been fitted. If I remember rightly, the kerb scraper should sit above the undertray (ie - it lays first against the bumper and then the undertray beneath it - then bolts goses through both).

  10. If you've got the money to buy a refurbished motor then you're better off just swapping them out in my opinion. Based on the car's age, it's likely that the little carbon brushes inside the motor have worn down, so cleaning it will probably buy you a few months at best.
