Guys,

 

Recently we have had a number of orders for new clutch kits because of original Nissan clutch failures. This is hardly surprising given the age and mileage of the 350z now. Allied to this we have received numerous enquiries from folk trying to establish which is the best solution for them.

 

To enable you to take the guess work out of your clutch/package selection we have put together an easy to understand staged clutch upgrade range of products and allied that to other clutch/gearbox related parts as often it makes sense to carry out additional work/upgrades while the gearbox is off the car.

 

It is important to remember when replacing your worn out clutch that other associated clutch system parts may also be worthy of upgrade. Failures in the Master and Slave Cylinders are not uncommon and have been documented well on this forum. This is particularly relevant if you are upgrading to a clutch with higher-pressure plate/spring ratings than the standard clutch. Replacement of these items with either OEM or upgraded products is a serious consideration as there is nothing worse than having to carry out secondary work with all the inconvenience and additional costs associated with subsequent unreplaced part failure, so please check out all our prices when making your choice.

Stage 1

Torque capability > 350 lb/ft

Upgrade Organic clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel or Single Mass Flywheel.

 

Upgraded organic plate with more torque handling capacity, but similar OEM comfort if paired with Dual Mass Flywheel. The Single Mass Flywheel will be sportier with better engine responsiveness, but does chatter / rattle a bit more on idle and low revs, under 2000rpm.

For those with NA power and like the car to perform on fast road or track with just a 20-30% increase in pedal effort due to increased clamping loads. This is where the best sellers reside. We are fond of the JWT combo package, especially as it can hold 500 lb/ft! Huge value for money!

If you are Supercharged or Turboed, then this is the minimum you would want to consider. Yes, your OEM clutch will work fine for a while, but we bet it will not last unless you drive like Miss Daisy or the car is a garage queen. This stage will also work for serious NA cars / drivers.

This is now getting serious! While there are big brands like OS Giken, Carbonetic etc, we feel SPEC has got this covered with the big value kits that are not short on performance. There are 3 flavours: P-trim, SS-trim and ST-trim), but they all will handle between 700 to 1500 lb/ft of torque!

Note:

All stages, depending on brand, will come with brass pilot bearing, clutch alignment tool and a Throw-out Release Bearing (TOB). You will have to specify if you want a SMF or DMF and which brand. We can recommend for you amongst our extensive list of brands one to suit your needs, comfort, sport of hardcore performance.

 

On some brands like SOUTH BEND you can opt for a small fee for the quiet disk option, which reduces significantly the transmission rattle if you have gone with the SMF.

It is also important to know that these packages are no rigid and we will be able to advise, depending on your budget, to still get you the performance you require: eg you may want a clutch that can hold +700 lb/ft, but rather than go for the Stage 5 Twin setup, we can recommend a Single clutch disc setup that can hold that torque and at a lower cost.

Could you advise on the best package/options for:

 

N/A daily driver

Stuck in traffic each morning

Don't want anything harder than OEM pedal feel (can live with mildy stiffer)

Do not want clutch chatter

Want to replace with as best possible performace to achieve this

Best possible ancillaries to go with above..

Just had my "presumably" slave cylinder go as pulled up to services after 100mile trip went to go pushed clutch down straight to floor and no retraction. Checked clutch fluid next to brake fluid and it's empty!! Had to get recovered back home over another 100 mile trip on a lorry 😒. I have to get to work so no time to jack up and have a look but looks like reading here it's a slave cylinder.

It does have a stage 2 clutch fitted with a single mass flywheel. Done before I bought the car but they have invoices showing slave cylinder replaced only just over a year ago now. Which to me is to fast for it to go? Maybe set up wrong as had issues with smoothness of first to second and 3rd to 2nd, 1st changes almost impossible some times when cold. Was getting it checked out but now this.

 

I want to do work myself if possible but can't seem to find any helpful guide in where and how to change slave cylinder. Was also considering upgrading clutch hoses as well while there but again is this a easyish job or just a headache?

 

My 350z is a 2007 313bhp version if that helps?
