As above, it's a pity things have gone the way they have. However; you should have no guilt, I believe you've been more than reasonable.

 

I hope things for you and your better half are happy and loving. I also hope the lot of this friend of yours improves, sounds like he's struggling emotionally. Emotional stress and depression are very difficult beasts to tame.

 

I hope that things work out for the better for all concerned.
